How Much Do You Really Know About Engine Leaning?
Learn the truth about the rich of peak vs. lean of peak argument. What really happens inside your engine when you lean (or don't)? Print out this article and take some time to learn what most pilot's don't know about proper leaning. Click here and look for the article by John Deakin titled "Mixture Magic".

Ya Never Know Who You'll Meet!

One of the great benefits of general aviation is the opportunity to rub elbows with lots of interesting types.  A few days ago, one of my instrument students and me, just finished a flight to Van Nuys and we noticed an old guy and a bunch of very attractive young women on the ramp.  After ruling out Bill Clinton, we recognized Hugh Hefner and a few of his bunnies. We found out later that they were on their way to an event revealing the playmate of the year in Las Vegas. Apparently judging from the size of Hugh's plane, his business pays a lot better than mine!

Need a Good Cruise Checklist?

Nerd When you reach cruise it's good practice to do a cruise checklist.  But most pilots don't know an easy to remember acronym.  Certainly examiners look for this on all checkrides. You can always haul out the one in the POH, but many don't cover everything you should be checking .  Here's one that's easy to remember and should cover most airplanes.

CHEFS - like the cook!
Cowl Flaps - closed or as required for cooling
Heading Check - DG vs Mag Compass for precession
Engine Gauges - All engine gauges + suction + ammeter
Fuel - proper tank and lean
Switches - fuel pump off, landing light off, CDI (GPS) switch set
New San Diego Website Records Your Flight - Good News or Bad?

It started out as a response to possible noise (read altitude) violations at KCRQ.  So now, big brother records all flights in the San Diego area.  Many pilots thought this was a bad thing, but probably only for bad pilots.  If you're doing the right thing, (no low flight) the proof is there to clear you of any false claims - those never happen do they?  You can check past flights by setting the date and time or set it to "live" to see what's currently going on. Try it out here.
