It is always hard to believe that another Groundhog Day Extravaganza has come & gone and spring has finally arrived in Jacksonville. For only the 15th time, Punxsutawney Phil was generous enough to predict an early spring and I know we are all appreciative! As we like to do each year, we begin by sharing with you a brief update on the Legislative Session in Tallahassee. After lobbying our state politicians in Tallahassee, Reese Henderson and David Rottmann, wrote a brief summary on the most critical Legislative priorities to the construction industry. We hope that after reading Reese & David's article, you will be better versed on the legislature's potential impact on the industry.

2011 Legislative Session in Tallahassee
Earlier this month, Reese Henderson and David Rottmann, along with delegates from each of the Florida Chapters of the Associated Builders & Contractors, attended the 2011 ABC of Florida's Tallahassee Legislative Conference to advocate key issues on behalf of the construction industry during the 2011 session. The March 22nd conference gave ABC members the opportunity to lobby our state representatives and state senators in favor of the following ABC legislative priorities:
HB 923 / SB 1352 - "Open Competition Act" - this bill seeks to ban project labor agreements (PLAs) from public construction projects funded wholly or partially by state funds. PLAs are becoming more common in Florida. This bill will help achieve the goal of creating more jobs for Florida's Merit Shop contractors, rather than out-of-state union contractors.
HB 7089 / SB 2040 - Immigration and "Safe Harbor" - some form of a bill mandating the use of the federal "e-verify" system is expected to pass this session. These bills include "safe harbor" language to protect employers from wrongful termination lawsuits when they comply with federal regulations governing the use of "e-verify".
HB 1021 / SB 830 - "Paycheck Protection" - this bill would prohibit the use of union dues for political contributions or other political activities without the employee's express written authorization, which must be renewed annually.
For more information about these and other Key Legislative Issues, visit ABC's website at www.abcflorida.com.

Tritt|Henderson Celebrates 6th Annual Groundhog Day Extravaganza
If you still have not taken the time to attend our Annual Groundhog Day Extravaganza, you truly are missing out. Not to worry, you can go ahead and mark your calendar now for our 7th Annual Groundhog Day Extravaganza to be held ON GROUNDHOG'S DAY, February 2, 2012! The party was once again featured in the Financial News & Daily Record. Joe Wilhelm, Jr. wrote the following article for the Monday, February 7th issue, which can also be found on their website (http://www.jaxdailyrecord.com/showstory.php?Story_id=532885):
Tritt Henderson welcomes
early spring with Phil party
The announcement of a short winter from Punxsutawney Phil on Wednesday was just another reason to attend a local annual celebration of the famous groundhog weather forecaster Thursday at the 5 Points Theatre.
The Tritt Henderson law firm continued its February "Groundhog Day Extravaganza" tradition at the Riverside location and kept guests dry inside for the second straight year, despite some rain Thursday night.
"This is always a great event," said Paul Healy, of the Law Offices of Paul Healy.
The event began at the law office of Tritt Henderson at 707 Peninsular Place in Riverside six years ago as a way to thank clients and mingle with colleagues.
Rain typically followed guests to the party, which affected the event that was held both inside and outdoors. The law firm took the weather out of the equation last year by moving it to the 5 Points Theatre and the response was strong enough to return this year.
The party featured the movie "Groundhog Day" on the big screen, the Boogie Freaks playing live music and Punxsutawney Phil Mardi Gras beads and hats throughout the venue. |
