Are You Ready for New Frontiers?
"Your current safe boundaries were once
unknown frontiers." - Anonymous
If you are in transition, changing careers, starting
a new business or reinventing your career, you will inevitably explore
new frontiers. Building time to better understand and evaluate your next
chapter will ease your transition. Sometimes you will have
control over when you explore new frontiers and sometimes you will be propelled
to consider new frontiers. The unknown can seem daunting, here are five questions to help you decipher and
prepare for your next chapter:
1. What value
will you create or provide in the new frontier?
This is about fully understanding the
opportunities, so you can define or evaluate your ideal position. Your answer will help you to start chipping away at some of
the unknown elements. It also provides you with a framework to assess
whether your ideal role exists or whether you will need to create it. Answering this question clarifies the key components of what you are looking for in your next chapter.
2. What will the new frontier provide that your current
frontier does not?
This helps you to identify your assumptions to minimize
your chances of discovering that the grass in fact
is not greener on the other
side. Once you have a list of assumptions, you will need to gather information to determine whether your assumptions are true or not. Be as objective as possible when
assessing your current frontier, your list should be balanced and include what
you enjoy in your current role, what is missing from your current role and the factors you believe will make your ideal role more enjoyable/fulfilling.
3. What does it take to succeed in the new frontier?
Learning first hand what it
takes to succeed will indicate whether your next move is aligned with
your interests, strengths and values. You will also gain a clearer perspective of what additional skills and strengths you may need to operate in your next chapter.
4. How will you thrive in the new frontier?
Your
personal and professional experiences equip you with a solid set of
transferable skills. The key here
is to be realistic, it is human nature to overestimate your strengths and
underestimate your weaknesses. Make sure you gather a second, third, fourth and
fifth opinion of what you do well, as well as areas in which you can develop. Your job is to help you others to help you, by describing how your specific expertise is relevant to the new frontier.
5. How will you expand your
network to guide and support you?
Many
people have walked miles in the new frontiers you want to explore, these very people will help you to
validate your answers to the above questions. Once you have a good handle on
the first two questions, find a handful people who can mentor,
motivate, connect and advise you. These relationships
will increase your access to information, provide insights into the ways things are done, show you how to best approach opportunities and offer words of wisdom and
encouragement along the way.
New frontiers are an essential part of your career
advancement strategy without them you stifle your growth and ability to do some
truly amazing things.
