Laura Beagle

Recently I was reflecting on my career, my "everyday job" in which I get to share and witness people being born into this world.  It is amazing!  It's not an event, in this culture, that many people are privileged to be a part of often.  I am so grateful to be witnessing and offering heart-felt support to a woman while she moves through the immense transformation of labor and birth.  I have been doing this work since 2001 and it continues to amaze me.  I have been offering nurturing touch to women who are pregnant with my prenatal massage and then during labor as a doula.  I like offering the continuity and it builds relationship with my clients.

As a doula I am sensitive to the needs of the laboring woman as well as her partner's.  I help to train the partner to be the one that creates the safe-space for the woman to labor, like a "confidence container".  I read and follow the woman's leads with good communication, knowledge and intuition and invite women to integrate the body and mind through visualization and relaxation techniques both in labor and during prenatal massage sessions. I also combine energy balancing techniques in support for women laboring or during massage. I witness and celebrate birth and the magnificent threshold that women move through on their journeys to become mothers.

If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!
By Sarah Gralnick

Ayurvedic texts speak of a unique window of time following birth during which the mother's system is as fragile as the newborn's. These "vedas" describe an outline of proper care to balance the mother's system on all levels, they explain the  concept of 42 days for 42 years: if balance is restored properly during the first six weeks postpartum, health problems will be prevented for 42 years to come. The texts recommend ways to restore fluids and beneficial oils to the body as well as eating foods that provide  maximum nourishment with minimum impact on the digestive system. For example; mothers are encouraged to rub oil all over their bodies 15 minutes before bathing, and cook their grains with twice the usual amount of water. 4th Trimester is greatly inspired by Ayurvedic teaching of postpartum care while incorporating wisdom from other cultures.
4th Trimester is a holistic postpartum care advocate and provider based at the Women's Wellness and Education Center 24 Arlington St.
4th Trimester creates a space for women with babies where the mother's needs for healing and rejuvenation and her need to be a loving and capable care provider are met simultaneously. It is a central goal of 4th Trimester to support women in reconciling their  needs as individuals and their needs as mothers to find harmony in their lives.

8:30am...our early labor
I woke up feeling refreshed.  Saturday had been a wonderful day and I remembered feeling more relaxed than I had in weeks.  My house was clean, the last of the errands were done, and I had gotten a good night sleep (which didn't happen too often by this point).  I was four days overdue and had been 80% effaced and three centimeters dilated for a month now.  Jude had even dropped and had been just hanging out at 0 station for weeks, but no sign of labor.  Sure, I had been having some contractions for the past month, but nothing more than menstrual type cramping.
Pete brought me a bowl of cheerios to bed, I sat up to eat and felt my usual abdominal cramp.  I told him I was having a contraction, but honestly we didn't think much of it, since this had been going on for weeks, only to fade away to nothing.  Over the next hour, they continued and by midmorning, we knew it was something more.  We gave our midwife a ring, just to give her a heads up...my contractions had started three minutes apart and were lasting about 45 seconds, but they weren't very painful.  I told her that we would like to stay home until they became more intense.  It was a beautiful day, so she suggested for us to take a walk and call her back when we were ready.
