The articles in this newsletter highlight the services we offer to Asheville families to promote emotional well-being. We hope that if you or someone in your family could benefit from physical, emotional or energetic support through a difficult life transition or the processing of past difficult events or relationships that you think of us as a safe and nurturing place to do that work.

The first article below highlights the individual and group settings available to support new moms and dads in the transition to parenthood. The second article describes a cutting edge therapy called Somatic Experiencing that is available at the wellness center to resolve past traumas held in your body. The third article describes how helpful the energetic work of acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be to support your emotional well being.

Next month's e-newsletter will focus on opportunities at the wellness center available for pregnant women.

Thanks for supporting us as we support the Asheville community!

Eve-Olution at the Women's Wellness and Education Center
Becoming a mother: a ripe time for growth
By Shelley Tom, MS, NCC

Asheville Community Theatre generously offered the new moms I work with opening night tickets to "Eve-Olution". This funny and touching production chronicled the story of two women trying to navigate motherhood, careers, and marriages. The play captured the very essence of why I specialize in working with women and families during the transition to parenthood.

Somatic Experiencing and Trauma Resolution
A different kind of counseling
By Elli Schmeltekopf, MS, LPC

You can probably conjure up a time in your mind when your boss or perhaps your spouse said something that really made you angry. You may even be able to feel the impulse you had to physically lash out at them. That is our natural instinct that we share with animals - threaten my territory and I will fight you. Being appropriate humans, we resist that impulse to fight our boss or spouse and we try to find some other way of managing the situation.

Using Acupuncture to Promote Emotional Wellness

By Natalie Allard, L.Ac

The emotions are very important in Five Element Acupuncture. A balanced, healthy person should experience the whole range of emotions, as they are appropriate. If a loved one dies it is appropriate to feel grief, but with the passage of time, a balanced person accepts the loss and can celebrate the life of that loved one. If someone is stuck in agonizing grief years later, that calls for further investigation. From a diagnostic point of view, each of the Five Elements has an emotion that is associated with it, so the skilled practitioner tests each of the emotions, looking for appropriateness in the responses. There are other associations with each of the elements, such as the color on the face, the sound in the voice and the odor of the body. The moment any element is imbalanced, these things change, as well as things like taste preferences and temperature distribution.
