Communication is a key to success for any organization.  Most companies find it challenging to get information to flow upward but have little trouble communicating down.

Effectively Communicating Up Involves:

-Communicating Needs
-Sharing Data
-Creating Motivation
Communicating Needs

Communication is a two-way process.  Employees need to speak up as much as the management team does.  Encouraging such behavior helps all employers to understand each others roles' and responsibilities.

Reinforce the company's vision and state how current objectives contribute to it, then explain that the employees' input is needed to make attaining the vision a reality.

Sharing Data

Many managers are unaware of their employees' daily activities.  Ask employees to explain what goes into each project by listing the activities, costs and time spent on each.  This can include reviewing survey results, client satisfaction ratings, or other factual data.  Outline various scenarios enables employees to see their impact on the bottom line and will prompt them to participate in the process.

Motivation

Management input plays a BIG role in motivating employees.  Communicating and working towards a goal is essential. To make communicating with managers easier, especially with off-site or satellite sales and service teams, arrange a group conference call or online meeting to have employees share their ideas about the project or strategic plan. Encourage roundtable discussions as well so employees can speak openly about any concerns.

If employees don't know what is expected of them then how can you expect them to perform to their full potential?

In most cases, you can trace back every employee issue (attendance, morale, performance etc.) to communication.  Companies that communicate effectively are far more likely to report on high levels of employee engagement and lower levels of turnover.
