New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman releases the report of his Leadership Committee for Nonprofit Revitalization

On February 16, 2012, New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman released the report of his Leadership Committee for Nonprofit Revitalization.  The Leadership Committee, which includes Pro Bono Partnership Executive Director Rick Hobish, has made 38 recommendations targeted at reducing legal, regulatory, and financial burdens on nonprofits; strengthening governance and accountability practices; and developing a strategic vision for New York's nonprofit sector.

   

Key recommendations include:

  • Bringing immediate financial relief to nonprofits through state cash flow loans;
  • Fixing the state contracting problems by establishing a new Office of Contracting Reform and Accountability within the Executive Branch;
  • Creating a statewide data vault to generate cost savings and improve government oversight;
  • Modernizing laws to make New York more nonprofit-friendly;
  • Mandating independent oversight of executive compensation;
  • Mandating independent oversight of financial audits;
  • Enhancing the Attorney General's powers to stop fraud;
  • Launching "New York on BOARD," a new initiative with New York's business community to recruit strong and more diverse nonprofit directors;
  • Launching "Directors U," a statewide initiative to provide free or low-cost training for nonprofit boards; and
  • Developing a blueprint for the future of New York's nonprofit sector.
