Raking Up the Leaves:  A Practical Approach to Managing Employee Leaves of Absence

Did you know that each time a Connecticut employer deals with an employee leave of absence, it needs to ensure direct compliance with up to seven different legal obligations?  Management of employee leaves is one of the most challenging tasks for a human resources manager. 
 
This interactive workshop will focus on practical steps to take in navigating the multiple legal responsibilities of employers, including federal and state disability and family medical leave laws, workers' compensation requirements, contractual obligations and personnel policies. 
 
Topics will include:   
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"),
  • The Connecticut Human Rights and Opportunities Act
  • The federal Family and Medical Leave Act ("FMLA"), including the 2009 regulatory amendments
  • The Connecticut Family and Medical Leave Act

In these turbulent economic times nonprofits are dealing with extraordinary challenges.  This important workshop will discuss the legal and fiduciary obligations of Board Members of a nonprofit organization, and how Boards can effectively deal with these challenges.

  • What are the legal roles, responsibilities, and proper activities of the Board of Directors of a nonprofit organization?  Have these roles and responsibilities changed as a result of the challenging economy?  
  • What role should the Board play in the day-to-day operation of the organization?
  • What are the potential liabilities of Board Members?  Are Board Members liable for the organization's debts? 
  • What legal protections exist for Board Members?
