New Humanitarian Academy to train disaster responders

The Humanitarian Academy at Harvard, a new comprehensive training program for humanitarian workers, will be offered through the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI), a University-wide center that uses research to improve aid response. The Academy will include the Lavine Family Humanitarian Studies Initiative, an existing training program for humanitarian professionals that was recently expanded through a gift from Harvard alumni Jonathan and Jeannie Lavine. There also will be a new, interdisciplinary concentration in humanitarian studies, ethics, and human rights, to be offered at HSPH beginning in 2013, and hands-on training through internships with relief agencies. Some HDL, or "good" cholesterol, may not protect against heart disease

A new study by HSPH researchers has found that a subclass of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the so-called "good" cholesterol, may not protect against coronary heart disease and in fact may be harmful. Read more

Wessling-Resnick to direct Division of Biological Sciences
Marianne Wessling-ResnickMarianne Wessling-Resnick, professor of nutritional biochemistry in the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases, will become the director of the Division of Biological Sciences at HSPH, succeeding Laurie Glimcher. Wessling-Resnick will also continue in her role as the director of the Biological Sciences in Public Health Program.


HSPH Mourns Endang Sedyaningsih

EndangEndang Sedyaningsih, MPH '92, SD '97 received her master's and doctoral degrees from the Department of Global Health and Population. In 2009, she was appointed Minister of Health in her native Indonesia. Minister Endang returned to HSPH in May 2011 to deliver a Dean's Distinguished Lecture on "Efforts in Materializing Health Care Equity in Indonesia." She passed away on May 1 from lung cancer.
