Move over potatoes, make room for healthier school lunch
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has come under fire from politicians and potato lobbyists over its proposal to cut back on French fries and potatoes in school lunch and offer broccoli and other vegetables instead. Yet its plan is based on sound science--and could help turn around this country's obesity and diabetes epidemics, say the experts at HSPH's Nutrition Source. Read more

Returning home, with a plan to thwart killer TB
 In Kenya's arid Wajir district, across the border from Somalia, attending school is not a given. Though some children learn to read while sitting on the floor in crowded classrooms or gathered on the dusty red ground under a tree, others must stay home to help tend the livestock so vital to the nomadic community's precarious existence. HSPH postdoctoral fellow Osman Abdullahi was one of the lucky ones, and he hopes to someday return his community's investment by taking on one of the district's worst scourges: tuberculosis. A neurosurgeon, MPH degree in hand, returns to Louisiana focused on public health
Anil Nanda did not really need to earn a master's degree in public health.
He's already an accomplished neurosurgeon. Still, Nanda was ready to take on a new challenge. "I think intellectual cross-pollination and stimulation is extremely important," Nanda explained during his last week at HSPH, before heading back to Louisiana with an MPH in quantitative methods. "Otherwise you don't get new ideas. It's like 'sharpening the blade.'" Read more

International symposium in Boston targets drug resistance Scientists from around the globe attended HSPH's Second Annual Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics (CCDD) Symposium, organized by Marc Lipsitch, program chair, professor of epidemiology at HSPH, and CCDD director. The conference, entitled "Antimicrobial Resistance: Biology, Population Dynamics and Policy Options," was held October 3-4. Learn more
Upcoming workshops

This workshop covers the cultural and demographics aspects of HDS use, safety and regulatory issues, and a review of the most popular HDS. During hands-on segments participants will look at evidence-based information sources available through Harvard. Attendees will learn where to find information on HDS interactions and toxicities and create individual interaction profiles. Clinicians and researchers are encouraged to attend and bring questions and topics they wish to explore.
