Fellows named
Andrew Thorne-Lyman, a doctoral student in the Department of Nutrition, was named a recipient of a Julius B. Richmond Fellowship from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. He will receive a dissertation grant from the Center to fund independent research during the 2011-12 academic year. Thorne-Lyman is interested in the potential of nutritional interventions during pregnancy and early childhood to improve neonatal and infant health and developmental outcomes. His doctoral research explores the effects of vitamin D and calcium on maternal and child health outcomes, including preterm delivery, preeclampsia, and infant growth and mortality in Tanzania and Denmark.
Two of this year's Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars will conduct research at HSPH. The program, which provides two years of post-doctoral support, emphasizes identifying strategies to reduce health disparities. Esther M. Friedman, will examine the degree to which the resources of broader social contexts--extended kin, friends, and neighbors--influence population health. Jennifer Karas Montez, will investigate the social, psychological, and biological mechanisms that link educational attainment and mortality risk.
