Meet Cooper, the Countway Library Therapy Dog


cooperCountway Library began a dog therapy program this summer. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Cooper -- a friendly, energetic Shih-Tzu puppy who neither barks nor bites -- will be available to play and snuggle with library visitors for 30-minute sessions. Harvard ID required. When not at Countway, Cooper works with Caring Canines as a registered therapy dog visiting hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and assisted living facilities in the Boston area. Study finds care disparities at
small rural hospitals  

hospital signIn the first national study to examine care at critical access hospitals (CAHs) in rural areas of the U.S., HSPH researchers found that CAHs have fewer clinical capabilities, lower quality of care, and worse patient outcomes compared with other hospitals. The researchers found that patients admitted to a CAH for heart attack, congestive heart failure, or pneumonia were at greater risk of dying within 30 days than those at other hospitals. Read more 

Nearly 350 million adults have diabetes, study finds


obese manA major international study collating and analyzing worldwide data on diabetes since 1980 has found that the number of adults with the disease reached 347 million in 2008, more than double the number in 1980. The research, published reveals that the prevalence of diabetes has risen or at best remained unchanged in virtually every part of the world over the last three decades.

Patient safety experts call for shorter resident physician shifts

 

As of July 1, new rules limit first-year residents to shifts of no longer than 16 straight hours, but do not restrict hours for more experienced residents. These guidelines do not go far enough to protect patients from fatigue-related errors by residents, say the authors, according to a group of physicians and patient safety experts, including HSPH's Lucian Leape.
