Take the stairs to the summit
 

Aconcagua mountainRegister a team of five by March 22 for the EcoOpportunity Team's 3rd Annual Take the Stairs competition. This year, participants will once again agree to shun the elevator for a month, climbing steps equivalent to the summit of Aconcagua, a 22,841 ft. mountain located in the Andes Mountain Range on the border between Chile and Argentina. Around the School 

 

Human Resources moves to Smith St.
HR joins other administrative offices, including External Relations, in the School's new building at 90 Smith St. on March 18. There will be limited HR services on the day of the move, but the office's main number 617-432-0979 will be staffed.

 

HR procedures beginning March 21:
  • The office's mailing address and staff phone numbers will remain the same. 
  • Paperwork such as fitness benefit forms can be dropped off in the box labeled "Human Resources" located on the 5th floor of Kresge (on the door of Kresge 502A). Any paperwork placed in that box will be picked up by noon each day. Send regular mail through interoffice mail.
  • HR will maintain one office at Kresge (Room 502A) which will be used by appointment for Work/Life consultations, interviewing and meetings with employees.

Researcher honored

The Congress for New Urbanism-New England has honored Anne Lusk as the inaugural recipient of their Achievement Award for her work in promoting the link between health and the urban environment. She received the award at the Sustainable Urbanism Summit held in New Haven, Conn., on March 17.

cellsNew understanding of cell migration may have implications for cancer treatment research

A study co-authored by HSPH's Jeffrey Fredberg sheds new light on the way that cells collectively move within a tissue during embryonic development, wound healing, and the spread of cancerous tumors. As layers of migrating cells move, they blend and flow collectively. Each cell, however, remains fixed and solid-like for short periods, crowded by the presence of its neighbors. The researchers compared this quality to the movement of glass, or as Fredberg told The Harvard Crimson, jostling fans trying to get into a crowded stadium. Read More
