World leaders gathered at the United Nations this week to discuss progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to eradicate poverty, hunger, and disease by 2015. While there is much to celebrate, there is much that still needs to be done to meet the targets in global health. Dean Julio Frenk co-authored an editorial on The Huffington Post urging stakeholders to expand support for maternal and child health, accelerate the momentum to combat AIDS, TB, and malaria, and prepare health systems to face future challenges. Certain bacteria that inhabit the intestine provide an environmental trigger that initiates and perpetuates chronic intestinal inflammation in individuals who are genetically susceptible to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a study led by Harvard School of Public Health researchers has found.
