Dean Julio Frenk offers an academic year welcome message for faculty, staff, and students
A new academic year is always a time of excitement,
opportunity, and discovery. For me, this
September is particularly exhilarating, as it is only my second full year as
Dean at Harvard School of Public Health. A year ago, still new in my job, I had a clear sense of the immense
aspirations and potential embodied in the School's faculty, students, and
staff. I recognized both the
responsibility to protect the School's significant legacy of accomplishments,
and the desire to build on those accomplishments and aspirations to develop the
first true school of public health of the 21st century. Read more

Greece Goes Smoke-Free in Restaurants, Bars with HSPH Support
On September 1, 2010, Greece, the nation with the world's highest
smoking rate, went smoke-free, with help from research from the HSPH and the Cyprus International Institute for the Environmental and Public Health. The new policy bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces, including
restaurants, bars and other hospitality venues and workplaces in Greece.
It also bans all advertising for tobacco products. Read more |

An analysis led by HSPH Professor Michelle Mello found that medical liability costs totaled about 2.4% of annual health care spending in the United States, or $55.6 billion in 2008. Read more |
Around the School
Nominations sought for Marvin Zelen Leadership Award in Statistical Science
This
annual award honors HSPH Prof. Marvin Zelen's long and distinguished career as a statistician and
his major role in shaping the field of biostatistics. It recognizes an
individual in government, industry, or academia, who by virtue of his or her
outstanding leadership has greatly impacted the theory and practice of
statistical science. The recipient will deliver a public lecture on statistical science
at HSPH and will be presented with a citation
