HSPH researchers suggest realistic targets for developing health workforce

global health workforceGlobal health workforce targets set by the World Health Organization are unrealistic for many low-income developing countries, according to an article in the July 2010 issue of Health Affairs by HSPH researchers Thomas Bossert and Tomoko Ono. They propose an alternative that takes into account a country's available financial resources and shifts the mix of health care workers to a more efficient, less costly mix of doctors, nurses and midwives. HSPHDean Frenk to join Commonwealth Fund Board of Directors
HSPH Dean Julio Frenk has been elected to The Commonwealth Fund Board of Directors, and will begin his membership in April 2011. The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation that supports independent research on health care issues and makes grants to improve health care practice and policy.

New appointment
William Hanage began his appointment as associate professor of epidemiology on July 1. His research explores the evolution and ecology of infectious diseases, specifically bacterial pathogens like pneumococcus, and draws on the tools of both molecular epidemiology and population genetics.
