FREQUENT-FLYER PROGRAM 3G A GOOD DEAL?
When frequent-flier programs began more than 25 years ago, airlines found they were powerful incentives for loyalty to their brand. Then they found they could sell miles to credit-card companies, hotels and other merchants who wanted to give out miles as rewards to their customers. That proved to be very good business. Now, so called "3rd Generation Mileage Program", the airlines are finding there are big profits in selling the mileage directly to consumers. Even through not a bargain consumers are buying them up. You'll be paying 3 cents per mile and redeeming for 1.5 cents. So is it a good deal? Not really, but a great deal for the airlines!
Frequent-flyer mileage is another form of currency and with 10 Trillion frequent-flyer miles in circulation it is estimated that 20% will never be used. It's an asset you should spend wisely, USE IT WHEN YOU CAN. However, there are better ways to use the mileage than getting cheap coach tickets. You should leverage those mileage for upgrade to business or 1st class, since those tickets are of much higher in value. You can also redeem mileage for 1st class international tickets on partner airlines; for example, first-class seats on British Airways that go for 140,000 miles round-trip.
