Kandy Esala Perahera, Kandy Aug 22 - Aug 30.
Every
year during July or August a grand pageantry takes over Kandy, Sri Lanka
to celebrate the Esala Perahera Festival which has become the unique
symbol of Sri Lanka. The significance of the festival is to
invoke the blessings of gods to bring rain for abundance of harvest and
prosperity. The centerpiece of the celebration is the Sacred Tooth
Relic of Buddha brought to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in the
year 310 AD in the tresses of a princess. The
Tooth is believed to possess special powers, including the ability to
bring rain, and thus became the symbol of sovereignty over Sri Lanka.
The general strike being enforced by the Maoists Party of Nepal is in
its third day with the demand of the government's resignation. Tourists are able
to move freely between the airport and hotels. Sightseeing has been impacted
and the markets are mostly closed. Bigger restaurants remain open in Kathmandu.
Isolated incidents have been reported from outlying areas but Kathmandu has
been largely peaceful.
However, we will be monitoring the situation
very closely and will be keeping you advised.
