Volunteer Spotlight

Pat Baum
|
| Pat has been volunteering with OC since 2002, helping primarily in the instrument room during CatNip. After CatNip, Pat takes home all the drapery and cuts it for spay packs, folds and cuts newspaper for clean traps during recovery, and folds all the towels for spay packs as well! Once when the washer was broken, Pat took over 100 blue towels home and washed and hung them out to dry herself. Pat is a retired schoolteacher from Boston and enjoys her house kitties and friendly outdoor cats (and raccoons!) that she feeds every day.

THANK YOU, PAT!!

Andrea Palmer

Andrea cares for a couple of colonies on the Northeast side of
Gainesville in the Airport/Industrial area. She has been a loyal and
dedicated trap committee volunteer for over a year now almost never
misses a 'nip. She can always be relied on to tackle big colonies in
remote areas and has quite a few all-nighter trapping expeditions under
her belt and has
transported a couple hundred cats to clinics.
On behalf of OC
THANK YOU, ANDREA!!

Can't volunteer on Catnip Sundays?
How about trapping?
|
Every month we are forced to turn away caregivers and their strays because they are unable to transport their cats to the clinic. We always need volunteers who can set traps and transport cats.
If you are available on Friday &/or Saturday evening before a clinic and have transportation, this is the job for you!

Dear Catnip Supporters:
At our monthly clinic for homeless cats on Sunday, July 12th, our ambitious volunteers spayed, neutered, and vaccinated 306 cats in less than 7 hours!
Here are more clinic stats:
Volunteers Veterinarians: 12 Dr. Julie Levy-OC Medical Director, Dr. Karen Schaedel, Dr. Cynda Crawford, Dr. Sara Kirk, Dr. Elizabeth Jolin, Dr. Mouhamadou Diaw, Dr. Deborah Cottrell, Dr. Laura Andersen, Dr. Jack Gaskin, Dr. Meriam Molstad, and Drs. Nirit Tzipory and Dr. Alex Gallagher (student surgeon supervisors).
Vet students: 27 Other volunteers: 50
Total = 89 volunteers!
We had a limited number of volunteers at this clinic due to the time of year and nature of our college town - thanks to all the volunteers who changed their summer plans in order to help out at OC! A special thanks to Bob Blanchard for the papa john's pizza, he left to go make and deliver seconds after we gobbled up the first order so fast! Another thanks to Angela Avok, a senior spay student, who drove through the night from Omaha, NE to make it to CatNip to spay!!
Operation Catnip is NOT POSSIBLE without its dedicated volunteers!
Cats
Males 143= (30% kittens, 3-5mo old) Females 163= (29% kittens, 3-5mo old) Ratio of Males:Females = 29:33
Vaccine-Only = 5. These ferals are trapped each year by their caregivers to return for vaccine boosters only.
Total = 306 cats were spayed or neutered, received Revolution to prevent heartworms, fleas, and worms, and were vaccinated against Rabies, Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, and Feline Leukemia Virus! The first cat was anesthetized at 8:00am on the dot by the Anesthesia Team. The very last surgery was completed by 3:00pm! Our Discharge Volunteers sent cats home from 1:30pm to 5:00pm and the remaining volunteers helped clean the facility until it sparkled.
Thanks to all the volunteers who make these clinics possible! Lunch was provided in part by generous donations from volunteers. Thank you, Ana Smith, Bob Blanchard, Judy Angley, Carissa Southard, and all the anonymous donators for the delicious food! ********************************************************************************** There are always volunteer opportunities during the month. To help with tasks such as fundrasing, advertising, trap repairs, or inventory, contact operationcatnip@nmhp.net for more details.
The next opportunity to help out during a clinic is just a few weeks away. Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 13th. You can find all future clinic dates at our website.
Thanks for doing your part in YOUR community!

**UPDATES **
|
Because of the dedication of local veterinary practices that partnered with NMHP, 1,159 pets of low-income families, 313 PitNip pit bull dogs, and 6,425 feral cats will not contribute to pet overpopulation in Alachua County!
We are pleased to announce that NMHP's long-awaited low-cost spay/neuter clinic is expected to begin operations in our temporary home, the Big Fix Rig, by July! Pet owners and feral cat caregivers throughout the region will be able to bring their animals directly to the Big Fix Rig for low-cost sterilization. That will bring and end to the following NMHP-sponsored voucher programs as of May 31st:
-Operation Catnip Outreach -"Red" Gallenkamp Vouchers
Distribution of all vouchers has ended. The Humane Society's Gallenkamp program will continue to distribute traditional black-printed Gallenkamp vouchers only.
Watch the website for updates!

???? 'Nip Trivia ????
|
|
Question: What does the vaccination "FVRCP" stand for?
Answer: FVRCP stands for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, (upper respiratory caused by herpes virus,) Calicivirus (could cause mouth ulcers, pneumonia, sneezing, and/or conjunctivitis, sometimes no symptoms at all!), and Panleukopenia (feline "parvovirus", causes diarrhea, intestinal ulcers).
Every Operation CatNip cat receives a FVRCP vaccine along with Feline Leukemia and a Rabies vaccine!
|
| Thanks to All Our Great Volunteers! |
| Operation Catnip could not run smoothly without our dedicated volunteers. We appreciate all the hard work before, during, and after the clinics.
If interested in volunteering for the September 13th clinic, please contact operationcatnip@nmhp.net or call 352-258-6757
We hope to see you there! |
Urgent! Volunteers Needed |
| Trap Repair Volunteer needed to fix and label traps. Without these traps, we are losing resources to trap more feral cats for our montly clinics!
Public Relations (PR) volunteer needed to flyer OC advertisements around the community. The more we educate the people, the more support we gain for our cats! |
