Editor's Corner
Juanita Davies
We are pleased to publish our first chapter e-newsletter. This quarterly bulletin will report on chapter events & member activities as well as provide interesting information to help you stay current with the latest MBTIŽ news.
If you are a member & would like to submit an article for our next newsletter, please email me, Juanita Davies, at jdaviesassoc@aol.com. Publishing an article on your area of expertise is one of the benefits of membership. It gives you an opportunity to educate our members on a topic of interest to them, while gaining visibility for yourself & your business. Articles should seek to inform rather than advertise. Articles for our next newsletter must be received by November 30, 2009 , and should include a short bio with contact information. Your feedback is also welcome! I look forward to hearing from you!

New York Supreme Court Justice is an ESTJ
by Shoya Zichy
Seven years ago I interviewed Judge Sonia Sotomayor for my book Women and Leadership Q. During the two-hour session, we validated her type as ESTJ, and discussed how her common sense clarity and judicial precision helped her achieve her goals
She describes her leadership strengths as first of all being highly organized. "I find the most direct and quickest route to accomplish things. "I just look at someone doing something and immediately think of how it could be done more efficiently. Secondly," she continues, "I am a good delegator. I look at my staff, figure out their strengths and weaknesses, and then pick projects that will challenge those strengths." And what do others say about her? "They perceive me as very hard-driving, aggressive, demanding, practical and grounded. They say I get things done."
She personally attributes much of her success to perseverance and stubbornness. Also," she adds, "I pick my battles very carefully, and when I approach them, I try do so in the least confrontational way." Of course every style has its blind spots and she readily admits to hers. "Sometimes, I make decisions too quickly or I get caught up in the pure logic of the situation and forget to consider how others will react."
Overall the Judge's comments reflect an emphasis on planning and prioritizing. ESTJs tend to set clear, measurable goals and move along the most expedient route. With their assertive style, they usually persuade others to their point of view.
Today her goals are geared to personal development. "I have achieved my lifelong dream 20 years early," she says, "now I need to improve my physical and emotional well being." She plans to travel once a year, exercise every day and spend more time with friends and family. "Personal as opposed to professional development," she says ruefully, "may prove the biggest challenge of all."

What's Happening?
APT-New York Metro Events
by Jodi Garner
Rosie O'Grady's was the place to be on Sept 22nd! With the Clinton Global Initiative being held across the street at the Sheraton Hotel, at 52nd and Seventh Avenue, there was a buzz in the crisp fall air with people who would like to see change in the world. Over 30 MBTI practitioners who are ready, willing and able to help foster that change, one individual at a time, gathered to connect, re-connect and launch a great season for the New York City Chapter of the Association of Psychological Type. A slate of engaging programs is on tap and includes: a demonstration MBTI de-briefing panel, two deep dive sessions on Archetypes as well as Carl Jung and his work on Psychological Type. The curriculum also includes a how-to practicum on social networking. Our next outreach event is slated for October, so look for our program announcement coming soon in your email.
Jodi Garner, chapter VP Programs & formerly of Talent Management at Lehman Brothers, is lending a hand fundraising for non-profits, in the Major Gifts department at Channel 13/WNET.org while she searches for a full time role. JodiGarner@mac.com.

The knowledge and diversity within our chapter community is a gift. It's an opportunity for us to recognize and share our strengths and to help not only ourselves, but others. Proposed by Co-VP Events Bruce Cohen and led by VP Programs Jodi Garner, we are spearheading an exciting Philanthropy Project to offer the benefits of the MBTIŽ to a non-profit's staff and those they serve. We invite you to join us in this partnership and bring your experience. Contact JodiGarner@mac.com to become a part of this APT NYC first. | |
