Black Tie & Tails
Plan to attend the 5th Annual Black Tie & Tails Gala on Saturday, February 14, 2009, 7:30pm - 11:00pm at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites on First Street in Alexandria, VA to benefit the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. This year's theme is "007 - The Dog Who Loved Me" and is an homage to James Bond. Elegantly clad canine guests and their human companions will enjoy a fantastic, fun-filled evening to help the animals in our care.

Meetup Group
Jeff & Josie

The old saying goes, if your dog is over-weight, you are not getting enough exercise. Our goal is to meet with other local active, and not so active, dog owners who are interested in running (or walking) with their dog for general fitness or to lose a couple extra pounds (both you and your dog). Runners and walkers are welcome.

New Year's Resolution Time of Year

JosieHi Everyone!

It's been an amazing year and want to thank all of our wonderful customers for their support.  We finished 2008 by welcoming the 20,000th dog into our playroom.  We know that most of our customers come from you, telling your friends and neighbors, how much fun your four legged children have while they are here.  So again, thank you for your support.

My Dad and I get many questions this time of year regarding how I stay so thin (especially with the amount of treats I can talk the parents into giving me).  So we've put together a couple of resources to help my doggie friends take off those Holiday pounds and improve overall fitness for dogs and parents alike.  First, we've teamed up with the dog equivalent of Jillian Michaels (The Biggest Loser), Dr. Katy Nelson, who runs Alexandria Animal Hospital's Pawsitively Fit (See below for more information).  Also, we've started a meetup group for dogs and parents who are currently, or want to start, running or walking for exercise.  We hope to add more resources this winter to help lose those extra pounds and even compete in the Dogtopia Fur your Health 5k this spring.

Finally, for all you die hard Steeler fans we have a very limited supply of Steeler bandanas.  Get ready for the Superbowl with a bath or a spa and get a Steeler bandana.  Just ask for the Terrible Towel Special!!

Pawsitively Fit

Dr. Katy Nelson

Dr. Nelson is a 1997 graduate of Louisiana College and a 2001 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine.  She is in charge of the Alexandria Animal Hospital Pawsitively Fit program.  Obesity is the number one medical problem affecting dogs today, and this program gives canine owners suggestions and helps their dogs get started on the right track for successful weight loss.  Dr Nelson and her collogues are taking this recent health problem and look forward to teaching dog owners the tools to weight management.

You can email Dr Nelson by clicking here or call Alexandria Animal Hospital, 703-751-2022.
