Fall West Virginia United Methodist

United Methodist Men

The Fall edition of the West Virginia United Methodist should start showing up in mailboxes by the end of the week, but the digital edition is online now. In this issue, Rev. Michael Estep reflects on the faith of the Haitian people. The ministry he's a part of, Mountains to Mountains, has been working with people on the island nation for about nine years. In addition to the print piece, we've posted some audio postcards on the conference blog.

Bishop Lyght was the episcopal leader of the New York Annual Conference on September 11, 2001. We feature the bishop's thoughts in two reflections he wrote - in 2002 and 2011 - along with a feature that chronicles his experience on 9/11 and the days that followed. A complete transcript of his interview with us is also up on the blog.

And, check out the first in a series of columns on using the internet and technology, on page 5 of this issue.

Note: the deadline for submissions to the next print edition of the WVUM is October 31.

Nonviolence lecture at WVWC

The Brad Long Peace Education Fund Lecture will feature speaker Dr. Stanley Hauerwas, professor of Christian Ethics at Duke Divinity School.

The lecture begins 7PM on Monday, October 3, at Wesley Chapel on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The title of the lecture, "Sacrificing the Sacrifices of War," comes from his latest book which will be published in October, War and the American Difference: Theological Reflections on Violence and National Identity. (Andrew Bacevich, professor of international relations at Boston University and a retired career officer in the U.S. army writes of the new book: "Disenthralling Americans from war will require an authentic realism that displaces the illusions commonly passing for realism. In this luminous volume, Stanley Hauerwas continues the vital work of planting the signposts that show us the way."
