Call for Work Teams, Tenn., W. Va.
Rampant flooding in the southeast United States has killed at least 20 people and caused a yet unknown amount of damage to homes and businesses. The Tennessee Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Rev. Jason Brock, has called for UMCOR-trained Early Response Teams to aid in recovery efforts. Contact him at JBrock@tnumc.com.

Peace with Justice Sunday is May 30
The West Virginia Council of Churches (WVCC) received a grant from The General Board of Church & Society for their work in southern W. Va. WVCC will offer training to help people discuss the issue of mountaintop mining in a peaceful, non-violent way.

Church rejects move toward regional bodies
The United Methodist Council of Bishops confirmed votes on 32 proposed constitutional amendments, several that would have changed the global structure of the United Methodist Church. Members of Annual Conferences around the world voted on the proposed amendments in 2009. Five proposed amendments were ratified:
Amendment 8, adding "gender" to the categories of persons
protected in the list of duties of General Conference.
Amendment 9, setting minimum levels of support for the election of
bishops. Amendment 17, allowing lay people to vote on ordination matters. Amendment 19, permitting all clergy members of annual conferences
to vote to elect clergy delegates to general, jurisdictional or central
conferences. |
Bishop's Bike Ride
Every June bike riders travel from Charleston to Buckhannon helping people in the name of Christ. This year money raised supports children and
families in West Virginia, Haiti and Africa impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Nearly $370,000 given to Montcoal Mine Disaster Fund The West Virginia Council of Churches Montcoal Mine Disaster Fund has received nearly $370,000 in donations.
You may contribute online at wvcc.org; all contributions will be given to the families of the 29 miners lost and the two injured in the April 5 explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County.
Churches can also take up special offerings, treasurers can use fund #925 'Montcoal Mine Disaster' when filling out remittance forms. Details on this process are on the wvumc.org/miners page.
