TRINITY SCHOOL ART TEACHER, MIMI RAFFERTY, RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
Ellicott City, MD - On Friday, October 21, 2011 Ms. Mimi Rafferty, art teacher at Trinity School in Ellicott City, MD, received the Outstanding Visual Arts Educator Award presented by the Maryland Art Education Association (MAEA). The award category is Career Teacher at the Elementary/Middle level in an AIMS school. AIMS is the Association of Maryland Independent Schools. Ms Rafferty holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Antioch University and is currently in her 10th year as the art instructor at Trinity School where she teaches students from age four to fourteen. Since coming to Trinity she has expanded the art curriculum to include art theory with a strong emphasis on art history. Choosing a major art movement as the year's theme, Ms. Rafferty transforms the art studio into an art gallery setting with selected artworks of the yearlong art history theme allowing students to have an in depth experience and continuity in art production and displays for the year. Students look forward to the grand finale of the Trinity Spring Art Show where all their work based on the year's theme is placed on exhibit. Ms. Rafferty also takes student artwork to the larger community through a traveling art show, which is exhibited in local libraries in Howard County. Each holiday season her classes provide seasonal decorations for a local organization that helps preschool children with special needs. Mimi's experience and dedication are invaluable in encouraging students to explore, express and envision.
Trinity has reason to celebrate twice because Ms. Nan Howard, longtime friend of Trinity School, was also awarded the MAEA Outstanding Visual Arts Educator Award. Ms. Howard, former Trinity drama coach and current art director for Trinity's Summer Camp received her award for being selected Outstanding New Elementary Art Educator in Anne Arundel County.
