Volunteers Needed

Trash Volunteers are needed for October and beyond.

You're welcome to attend the K9Splash! Planning Meeting July 24th at 5:45 pm at Ambroz Recreation Center. Don't forget we are still looking for volunteers for the event. Please let Jill know if you can help. Thank you.

The Name is
"K
9 Acres" Off-Leash Park
Yes, the new dog park will be named K9 Acres!

Regarding the park status, Julie Sina, City Director of Parks and Recreation writes: "The grading is complete at K9 Acres, but we have to wait to seed, as this spring and early summer we have not had rain (to speak of).  In talking to my turf specialists I am told that the best time to seed will be mid-August.  We will keep a watchful eye and will seed as soon as humanly possible."

Dog Treats Needed!

If any of you out there are bakers, K9COLA could sure use donations of home-baked dog treats to sell at the Downtown Farmers Markets! Please contact Jill, our Volunteer Coordinator, or Site Coordinator Steve, to offer your baking services! Thanks.

K9COLA at Farmers Market
Farmers Market
The K9COLA booth at Farmers Market continues to be very successful in garnering sales and donations to support the off-leash parks. And we talk to a lot of people about the parks and our K9Splash! dog swim event coming up in August.

We want to give a BIG Thank You to the volunteers helping out at the market as well as to the wonderful people who have made and donated the dog treats for us to sell.

The remaining markets take place July 21st, August 4th & 18th, and September 1st & 15th. Remember to stop by anytime you are at the downtown market.

For anyone wanting to make and donate treats to sell, we will always gladly take them. You can email Site Coordinator Steve at steve@k9cola.org or call his cell phone at 360-0300.

K9COLA Recipe Book

Salmon Garlic Cookies

1 can cheap salmon, undrained
2 eggs
2 T.  garlic powder
1 c. 100% rice flour

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Put salmon in food processor and process until it looks like something the cat threw up. Add eggs and garlic powder and process again. Add rice flour 1/2 c. at a time,  processing well after each addition. It will look more moist than cookie dough. Put in a greased 11"x7" baking dish and bake for about 15 minutes.
Wine for a Good Cause a Success

K9COLA's 4th Annual "Wine for a Good Cause" was  a success! More than $1,100 worth of goods was donated to our silent auction. Attendance at the event increased 10% this year, and the sales donation from First Avenue Wine House was 50% greater. (Thanks for shopping even if you couldn't stay for the tasting!) With the sales donation, ticket sales, silent auction, and general donations received, this event generated $1,775 for K9COLA. Thank you to all of our supporters and sponsors for making this event possible. We would like to thank the following companies and individuals for donating to the silent auction:

Corporate Support

A special thanks to TrueNorth for selecting K9COLA as their April "Casual for a Cause." The employees raised $761.82 to help promote off-leash areas here in Cedar Rapids. Thanks again, TrueNorth: you demonstrated corporate social responsibility and showed how much your individual employees care, and we are grateful!

True North provides insurance and financial strategies for individuals and businesses.

If your business would like to help out, please e-mail Marie at marie@k9cola.org and we can arrange for a speaker from K9COLA to talk to your organization.
Donor Contributions

$300 was received in support of Pat Kramer and her companion, Bailey, who recently passed away. The donations were collected by their friends in National Services at Pearson.

$250 was received in memory of Fletcher Ehm, a Beloved Dog and Companion.

On behalf on the entire Board of Directors I would like to express our gratitude for these gifts and offer our condolences to the families who lost their four-legged friends. I know as my own pets age I fear the time when they will no longer be with me. I hope that I will be able to look back on their lives and remember the happy times. I take comfort in knowing All Dogs Go to Heaven and pass that along to others who may too.

Marie, K9COLA Chair
Interested in Some Serious Volunteering?

K9COLA is considering an opportunity to work with an Iowa City security company to help us raise funds. The opportunity would raise at least $3,000 for our organization. We would work during Iowa Hawkeye home football games. We would need at least 10 people to commit to a minimum of four games. Each game would require people to work for 8+ hours. A typical day for an 11:00 am game would involve showing up in Iowa City between 7:00 and 8:00 am and leaving after all cleanup after the game is over. If K9COLA makes a commitment of volunteers and then does not show up, we will be fined. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Marie at marie@k9cola.org and we can determine if there is enough interest to pursue this opportunity for our organization.
Be a responsible dog owner!

The Cedar Rapids Parks Department is having problems with irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs off-leash in city parks other than Cheyenne, and on trails other than those in the off-leash park, and who don't clean up after them. Anytime you are out and see someone whose dog is off-leash, or who doesn't clean up after their dog, remind them of the laws. Anywhere other than at the off-leash dog parks, dogs must be on leash when not on their own property. A city ordinance requires that people must clean up after their dogs. We can help to see that the laws are obeyed and that people become more responsible owners.

Most other towns and cities have similar ordinances.

If you have questions, please e-mail Steve at steve@k9cola.org. We need everyone's help.
Thanks again for your interest in our dog parks, and we'll look forward to seeing you at the park!

Sincerely,
K9Citizens for Off-Leash Areas
