The Value of Volunteering
| |
Give Back to Get Ahead
We know the many merits of volunteerism - but new research from LinkedIn shows it can help you get hired.
They found that more than 40 percent of hiring professionals consider volunteer work just as valuable as paid positions.
Plus, though nearly 90 percent of professionals have volunteer experience, less than half of job seekers mention it on their resumes.
An increased focus on philanthropy by employers is pretty win-win, if you ask us. Read more ...

Greetings!
We are glad we've landed in your inbox again this month! We hope you and your dogs are enjoying the mild winter by spending lots of time out at the Cheyenne Park Off-Leash Area! Read on to learn a bit about what's happening with the parks, and what our plans are for 2012. Sincerely, K9COLA Board of Directors |
Park Update Prepare for Mud at Cheyenne Fences are Up at Squaw Creek Due to the mild winter, the ground hasn't had a chance to freeze and stay frozen, so when you visit Cheyenne Park with your pups, be sure to be prepared for muddy paths! We know your dogs won't mind a bit, but don't wear your best shoes, and maybe remember to toss a towel into the car for after your romp. Also be very careful on days when things ARE frozen, because the ice can be treacherous if you aren't watching where you're going. Be particularly cautious around the gates, which get the highest traffic.
If you haven't driven out to see the location for the new park that is under construction at Squaw Creek, be sure to do so! The park will be across the road from the Gardner Golf Course. The city has all of the fencing up, and you can see where the walking trails will be. There isn't any turf yet, so you'll see either dirt or snow, depending on the day. It's very exciting to see progress and it will be great fun to have two wonderful parks by sometime next summer. |
How to Exercise Your Dog in Winter By Bess Maher
My chow chow, Nani, is covered in long, orange fur. I'm not. Children often stop Nani and me on the street to remark on how fluffy she is. No one has ever commented on my fur.
Now, abundant body hair on a human is normally a bad thing, but on below-zero days, I find myself staring enviously at Nani. A quick glance at her thick coat is also a reminder that my canine companion is ready and willing to brave the elements, even if I'm not. Read more ...

Walk with K9COLA in St Pat's Parade Help Us Make a Splash With LOTS of Dogs! This is going to be a fabulous year to join us for a parade! Each year, K9COLA walks in the annual SaPaDaPaSo parade in downtown Cedar Rapids. It is great fun -- and this year, it will be on a Saturday, so we'll have a better-then-usual crowd! Bring your dogs and dress them and yourselves in green if you like; we also need people to carry our banner, and we usually try to have doggie treats to hand out to onlookers. It is a lot of fun and all of you are welcome to join. If you have any questions, contact Steve at steve@k9cola.org; we'll announce details at our Facebook page, our website, and in our March newsletter. We hope to see you there! |
