January 2012
                                         Happy New Year!
Greetings!

This new year we are planning LOTS of events. In the works: wine tasting, silent auction, a regular downtown Farmer's Market presence, and of course the annual K9Splash! So stay tuned: there will be many opportunities to support dog parks in this area.

We are always eager to hear from you, so if you have a question, story, group, or event you'd like us to cover, please send us e-mail.
Thanks, and if you know someone who loves dogs, please use the "forward to a dog lover" link at the bottom so they can get the newsletter.

Best regards,
K9COLA

What Not to Feed Your Dog

Sharing our food with our pets is something many of us have done. Who hasn't slipped the dog something to eat under the table or given him the scraps from our dinner plates. Below is a list of foods that we eat but which could be dangerous if eaten by your dog.

Why Volunteer - What's In It for Me?

Every month we send out a call for volunteers to help with various projects and events, and people sometimes answer, sometimes not. In November I attended the Iowa Nonprofit Summit to gain some insight into different aspects of nonprofit organizations, and I did. According to Volunteering America, between of 2008 and 2010 Iowa has averaged 886,900 volunteers. That means that 37.9% of residents of the state are volunteering! That ranks us second among the 50 states and Washington, DC for volunteerism. For all of you who have answered the call - THANK YOU! K9COLA is an all-volunteer nonprofit, and without you we wouldn't exist.

But I want to let people in on a little secret: volunteering can benefit you as well. (According to the Mayo Clinic, older people who volunteer have lower rates of heart disease and live longer than peers who don't volunteer. All it takes to achieve health benefits is volunteering at least 40 hours a year, the researchers said.)

So the answer to the question posed in the title of this article is, a lot! Volunteering for an organization can offer the opportunity to build on skills learned in a classroom or to develop skills that help with career advancement. Leadership is a very sought after skill, and chairing an organization or a committee provides volunteers with a chance to build and showcase this skill. Fundraising is a great chance to build "sales" skills. Public Education allows people to build their communication skills. Working with the volunteer coordinator can help with people management and communication.

The next time we put a call out for volunteers, don't think of it merely as time you have to take out of your day to help someone else; think of it also as an opportunity to strengthen yourself as a person. I know that personally it has helped me. I completed a Master of Business Administration, but my job hasn't provided many opportunities to use that knowledge. K9COLA has allowed me to put things I learned into practice and has challenged me to become a better person.

One of K9COLA's goals for 2012 is to build its volunteer base, and we would like your help. If you have volunteered with us in the past, feel free to send your feedback to me. If you'd like to volunteer, but aren't sure how, let me know:  marie@k9cola.org. We have some new ideas that we think might help, but listening to our volunteers is the best way to learn what works and what doesn't.

Thanks again for your support!

New Dog Park
Ball Launcher
I drove by the new off-leash dog park across from Gardner Golf Course. They have put up all the fencing but haven't installed the gates yet. I'm really surprised they have been able to get this much done, as the whole area is a muddy mess right now. If you have a chance to drive by, do so and take a look. At this point you can see what the park will look like when it is finished. It is a little smaller than Cheyenne but still a nice park. It will probably be early/mid-summer before the park is usable. After they seed the park this spring, it will need to grow in for a while before we can be on the turf. If you have questions e-mail me at

Cheyenne Park
Ball Launcher
Here is some information from the Cedar Rapids Parks Department about the trails and entry areas at Cheyenne.  With all the wet weather and the ground not freezing yet, some of you have had some concerns about the soft ground. This condition is normal and will get better with time. We have always had this problem at Cheyenne every spring when the ground thaws. As more grasses grow back in the next year, the muddy areas inside the park will get better too. Once the ground freezes, it will be good until spring. If it doesn't freeze for a while, expect it to be soft and muddy after any rain. Even the sunshine on the cold ground can make the top soft. On early mornings the ground is usually still firm, if you can make it out there at that time of day. Email me with any questions.

Fun Dog Facts
The Basset hound made famous in the Hush Puppies shoe commercials was named Biggles.

Biggles' grandson, Mr. Jeffries, earned fame as the dog with the longest ears in the world. His ears measured 11 and ½ inches each and he often tripped over them.

Tia, a 2 year old Neopolitan Mastiff gave birth to the world's largest litter in 2005. She delivered 24 puppies by caesarean section. Twenty of them survived, setting another record of the most surviving puppies.

We wish you all the best in the new year!
