Natural Order Heading
BACKSLIDING HAPPENS

Can you relate to this scenario?  You'd been really good about keeping up with clutter and then came the holidays.  Clutter got scooped up and hidden in closets instead of being put in their proper places.  Since the New Year you haven't even tried to tidy - you've been leaving items here, there and everywhere.

BACKSLIDING is a common occurrence and can be rectified relatively easily.  Here are some steps you can follow:

1. Don't beat yourself up.  Be kind to yourself and remember this is a temporary phase.  (What you resist persists!)

2. Beat the clock.  Play a game with yourself: set a timer for 15 minutes and see how much you can clean up before the time is up.

3. Beat the bushes. Get those bags and boxes of jumbled quickly-hidden clutter out of the closet.  Play Beat-the-Clock: process unopened mail and return items to their assigned homes.

Trust me, this process can be fun.  A tremendous amount can be accomplished in a short time.  Within a week or two you will be back in your comfort zone!

To Save or Not-To-Save Personal Receipts?

That is the question.  During tax-prep season I'm often asked about saving personal receipts. Here are some tips:

- Save ALL receipts that are used as tax deductions, including donations, medical expenses, etc.

- For purchases put on credit cards, save the receipts for the month.  When you receive your statement, reconcile it for accuracy then discard the receipts and keep the statement for your records.  Exceptions:

  • If you think you may return an item, keep the receipt in an easy-to-find location or with the item
  • When you purchase an item with a warranty, attach the receipt to the User Manual and file with the rest of your manuals

Email me if you'd like to receive a Retention Guideline.
