Closet Organization
I've heard several people say recently that they are going to take a "stay-cation" this year and remain home for a week, relaxing and getting caught up on organizing projects. Whether you work on your closet during this time or you dedicate a rainy Saturday to the project, here are the basics to get the contents of your closet streamlined so it contains what looks good on you and makes you feel Pretty in Pink or Handsome in Houndstooth.
STEP 1: Take everything out of the closet. (Yes, it's true. Load the bed up with clothes and accessories and get busy!)
STEP 2: Try on everything. Everything? Yes, everything!
Look in the mirror and ask yourself the following questions:
- Does it fit?
- When was the last time I wore it? (More than a year? ... Out!)
- Is it still in style?
- How do I look in it? Is it flattering?
- Do I love it?
- How do I feel in it? Pretty? Handsome? Fat? Confident? Itchy? Sexy?
STEP 3: Categorize. Put the just-tried-on clothes in one of the following bags or piles:
- Donate to charity (or Garage Sale if they work for you)
- Repair
- Cleaners
- Keep (pile according to clothing type - pants, skirt, shirt, etc
STEP 4: Back in the closet! After you've tried on everything (and cleaned the empty closet), put your clothes and accessories back in the following manner:
- Like items together (dresses, shoes, pants, tops, belts, bags, etc.)
- Short to long
- Light to dark
- Tops above, bottoms below (if you have 2-level rods)
Excuse me - I have a question.
Yes?

I'm dieting - what about saving my Skinny Clothes?
If you plan on losing weight, you may want to save the clothes one or two sizes down from where you are. Since losing weight slowly and consistently is the way to go, you won't want to keep your Skinny clothes from the 1980's because they are most likely out of style. Treat yourself to a new wardrobe if you go down more than two sizes - you deserve it!
