The Power of Decision

Why do we clutter?

Gold Jewelry

There are many reasons why we clutter.  One of them is POSTPONED DECISION.  Look around you. Is there a pile of papers in the room?  Are there items that have no home because you don't know what to do with them?

Now is a good time to DECIDE TO DECIDE. It is said that when you make a firm decision, your subconscious mind goes to work on it.

"In your subconscious mind is a creative process of the ages.  It cannot refuse to serve you.  It has no favorites, and it knows no limitations.  It awaits your demand that it act.  Upon your demand, it proceeds to fulfill this demand without stress or strain. It moves into action in orderly ways and draws upon resources far greater than the conscious mind could ever know."

I invite you to quickly and easily decide what to do with HOMELESS items in your home and office. There is no one way or right way to organize - just what works best for you.  Your life flows better when it's clutter-free and focused, so ... DECIDE TO DECIDE and tackle the piles!

As you pick up each item, ask yourself:
- Can I easily and inexpensively replace it?  Can I find it on the internet?
- Do I need it?  Will I ever refer to it?  If yes, ask yourself what topic you would think of when retrieving it.

For example, you cut out an article with great photos and ideas on hiking in New Zealand.  You don't think you'll ever get there so you haven't filed it.  Truth of the matter is, you really want to keep the article.  Create a file for it called "Dream Vacations".  Once a year, review your files and make sure the contents haven't expired.

AVOID SURFACE ABUSE!

Do you see OPENHORIZONTAL SURFACES, such as tables, desk-tops and counters, and long to fill them with "stuff"?

You're not alone. We can become desensitized to clutter and forget what open spaces look like.

Tables, desks and counters are intended to be used for ACTIVITIES such as work, food prep and eating, NOT STORAGE!

Start a campaign to get you to
STOP SURFACE ABUSE!

Clean up after yourself so the surfaces will be ready for your next project.

To Save or Not-To-Save Personal Receipts?

That is the question.  During tax-prep season I'm often asked about saving personal receipts. Here are some tips you might find useful:

- Save ALL receipts that are used as tax deductions, including donations, medical expenses, etc.

- For purchases put on credit cards, save the receipts for the month.  When you receive your statement, reconcile it for accuracy then discard the receipts and keep the statement for your records.  Exceptions:

  • If you think you may return an item, keep the receipt in an easy-to-find location or with the item
  • When you purchase an item with a warranty, attach the receipt to the User Manual and file with the rest of your manuals
