Create a Memory Box
Do you have memorabilia that you don't use but still have great sentimental value? Are you tired of feeling guilty about keeping the plethora of items you don't want to release? Why not honor the truly special items by creating a MEMORY BOX.
1. Gather, make or purchase a special box. - a clear, plastic tote that holds hanging files and items works well (photo, middle right) - don't use a cardboard box - it absorbs moisture and attracts silverfish
2. Decide on the MEMORY BOX theme(s). For example: - My Childhood, My Parents, My Son, My Daughter, Clothes I Can't Part With Even Though They Don't Fit
3. Sort through your items and keep only the TREASURES. - let your children select their school/art work and other memorabilia first (store in a separate box for them) - keep the items that trigger happy memories - limit the quantity to only what will fit in the box
4. When it's hard to part with items, consider these tips: - give family heirlooms or items to other family members - help others by donating to charity (tax write-off) - remember that releasing an item isn't releasing the memories associated with it - photograph items before parting with them to preserve the memories
5. Put papers in hanging files for protection and easy access. 6. Label the box and store in secondary storage.
7. Honor the items! There's no point in keeping special treasures if you don't look at them periodically.
