15th Annual Day of Caring

US Bank employees help out for United Way's Day of Caring.
Thank you to everyone who participated in United Way's annual Day of Caring.  This day is an outstanding opportunity for people in our community and local nonprofit agencies to come together.

Day of Caring raises awareness about the work of human service organizations in the Greater Duluth area while mobilizing the volunteer potential of our community.

This year we had more than 400 volunteers and 60 projects!

Thank you for participating, volunteering, and most of all, for caring.

Power of the Purse Success!

The first annual 'Power of the Purse' fundraising event raised $7,000 for United Way of Greater Duluth's Imagination Library program.  The event was held May 6th at Spirit Mountain Chalet featuring a silent auction of unique and extraordinary purses, nationally-noted author Judith Viorst and dinner - all in support of early literacy.

Imagination Library is an early literacy program that delivers free books to children in our community.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this special event successful!

Next year's 'Power of the Purse' will be held on May 5th.  Mark your calendars now!

Annual Bike Swap Success!

Bill Howard of Continental Ski & Bike, presented Paula Reed, president of United Way of Greater Duluth, with a $7,000 check from the 4th Annual Bike Swap held April 17th and 18th.

The funds will be used in the local community to support health and human service programs and initiatives. Over 600 volunteer hours went into making the event successful.  "The generosity of so many will go a long way to help those who need it the most this year," said Reed.

Did You Know?

Did you know that if every individual who currently donates to United Way increases his or her gift by just $1 per week, we could generate an additional $275,000 this next year?

Our community need is enormous.
  • 33% of people do not earn enough to make ends meet.
  • 55% of rental households in Duluth spend over 30% of their income on rent.
  • 1 out of 2 children are not fully prepared for Kindergarten.
  • 9.7% of children in NEW Minnesota are uninsured (highest percentage in the state).

From programs that help our neighbors and even our own families cope in the face unexpected crisis, to programs that help working families overcome life's challenges and remain self-sufficient - each of us has inherited a wealth of community support services that improve the quality of life in our region.  It is up to us to protect and sustain it.
