Benefits of LED lighting;
Why all this hype around LED lighting? Why choose LEDs over traditional light sources like halogen or fluorescent? Here are a few reasons why LED lighting has become so popular so quickly;
Efficiency; Look for LEDs that have a output of up to 100 lumens per watt of power. That is right up there with the best fluorescents and Metal Halide gas lamps. This means that the LED coverts a large portion of its input power to light. Halogen lamps on the other hand run around 20 lumens per watt. The majority of the input power goes to create heat. LEDs help designers that are looking for LEED certification or meet a certain watts per square foot requirements.
Increased Life, reduced maintenance; the life of a properly designed LED lighting system can be up to 100,000 hours. The typical life of a fluorescent is up to 20,000hrs. This would be 5 maintenance cycles over the life of the LED.
No heat or UV; the light from a LED has no heat or Ultra Violet light. This will help when lighting any materials that are sensitive to prolonged exposure to heat/UV. Even small amounts of heat/UV can damage certain materials. Many retailers notice discoloring of there pads and forms in their showcases in as little as a year under fluorescent and halogen lights. This is not an issue with LEDs. LEDs are also great for food and cosmetics where heat/UV can destroy the product.
These three items are crucial when looking at the return on investment (ROI) of a LED based lighting system. In most projects, a case can be made to use LED lighting when taking all three into account.
