IN THE LOOP        August 2008
                                                                                                                 West Coast

Dear ,

It's already August, and it's hard to believe that you've been at your Co-op for a month! I hope that you are doing great and that your experience thus far has been interesting and valuable.

As your fellow Co-op student, I understand what it's like to work a 9-5 job. You get into a routine, and most of your day is spent among your colleagues at work. The office of Co-op Connections is here to help you keep you a part of the NU community even when away from campus. Our newsletters and emails provide interesting news and information about campus life, as well as events and activities happening in your area. Staying in touch with the University and other students is a good way to meet new people and build your network.

In this issue as well as throughout the semester you will see several opportunities to attend alumni events that we encourage you to go to. Some of you may think that these events are strictly for graduates, but
students are always welcome! Connecting the two groups, Students and Alumni, allows for meeting new people and building new relationships. These events will help you get involved early, and provide valuable professional opportunities and connections to come your way for your next Co-op and beyond.

Please contact us with any questions, issues or feedback. We are an office created for Co-op students, so if you have any suggestions about events or ways that might help you stay in touch with the University, let us know!

Your Co-op job makes you a part of a new community, but don't forget - you are still an important part of the Northeastern Community!

Keep up the good work and stay cool!

               ~Liv Kalinowska, Psychology 2010

Top 10 Earthquake Tips

In light of the recent earthquake in Southern California, we would like to remind you of some useful earthquake safety tips. We are glad that there were no injuries reported after the July 29th Earthquake, and that all Northeastern students are doing well.

Taken from  www.quakehold.com:

1. Secure heavy items of furniture using flexible nylon straps with peel and press application.

2. Secure TVs and other electronics using flexible nylon straps with adhesive buckles.

3.
Secure breakables and collectibles with Quake putty, wax or museum gel.

4.
Store emergency tools, including gas shut-off wrench and safety lightsticks.

5.
Prepare emergency supplies (food, water, blankets) and First Aid kits, including prescription medications.

6.
Learn how to turn off gas, water and electricity in case the lines are damaged.

7. Know the safe spots in every room - under sturdy tables, desks or against inside walls, and know the danger spots - windows, mirrors, hanging objects, fireplaces, tall furniture.

8.
Secure water heaters with two-strap kits.

9.
Create a disaster preparedness plan so that everyone in the family will know what to do in the event of a quake or other emergency.

10.
Decide where your family will reunite if separated and choose an out-of-state friend or relative whom family members can call after an earthquake to report whereabouts and conditions.
