Are You Over-'Doing' It?
We live in a 'doing' culture. Work and productivity are highly valued in the U.S. Many peoples' self worth is defined by how much they accomplish and how busy they are. And with the advent of new and ever-evolving technologies we can do more than ever before. Most of us have become skillful multi-taskers. We feel powerful and effective as we juggle computers, cell phones and, perhaps, parenting, doing as much as possible in the least amount of time. Often, if there's not much to do, we feel restless, even disoriented, as if something's wrong or missing. Celia, a friend of mine, recently returned from a week in Maui. "There I was in paradise," she said, " and I never fully relaxed or let go. I couldn't silence the cell phone or unhook from my laptop."
It took me one sprained and two broken toes over an 18 month period about 20 years ago to wake me up to the fact that I needed to slow down and cultivate be-ing in my life. It was before the days of iPhones and Blackberrys, and with the first injury I was sure my life would fall apart if I couldn't keep darting around, checking items off my many to-do lists at lightning speed. Even with crutches I tried to keep up my habitual fast pace, but it quickly became clear that my toe had a different plan. Healing wasn't happening. So, for 5 weeks I became Mindful Mary , and was soon calling the broken toe my 'spiritual teacher.' Somehow whatever was important got done and when something didn't, for the first time I was able to shrug my shoulders and say, "Oh, well." I became more relaxed and centered than ever before. When the toe healed, I quite quickly returned to the old 'do' mode, even with the best of intentions to never fall into that pattern again. I did get it, though, about 9 months later with the next broken toe. Being and doing have since come together in my life. The body doesn't lie.
Doing, of course, is fine. But many of us are out of balance. How do we come into balance? How do we tip the scales to enjoy a more harmonious, less harried lifestyle?
1. The first step is to face the truth of the negative consequences of over-doing. This assessment may be uncomfortable (the truth often is), but you're more likely to be motivated to make a shift if you are fully aware of the impact of your behavior.
Make a list of specific ways that over-doing is affecting you mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. How are the areas of health, family, friendships, fun/recreation and work being impacted? If you decide that you want to integrate being into your life more.......
2. Commit to small changes. Small, attainable action steps add up and lead to lasting results.
Identify who, where and what connects you to being. For example:
Looking out the window, listening to soothing music, swimming, walking, meditating, gardening, playing with your cat.
Gently and gradually include some of these items into your life. After 2 hours of email and phone calls, pause for a minute and take 3 conscious breaths. Two hours later, take a 10 minute walk in a quiet area. At the end of the day, stretch, meditate or free write in your journal. Doing and being can work together very nicely.
3. Practice presence. Being present means being fully engaged (body, mind, feelings, spirit) in the here and now, with whatever is in front of us, moment to moment. Many of us are strong thinking types and we're in our heads more than our bodies or feelings. Practicing presence can be a simple choice as you move through the day to notice from time to time if you're here or if you're lost in thought, fantasy or some other distraction. When we open to experience just the way it is, we align with being, moving with the river of life rather than trying to shape events to conform to our needs and expectations.
None of this is complex. Nor will it take much time or energy to restore balance in your life. These ideas and practices are elegantly simple. Remember, what you feed grows. Instead of do-do-do-do-do, you just might become a master of do-be-do-be-do (-: |
