Snapshots of Ames

Octagon for the ArtsEntry deadline: May 17 
Exhibit: June 4 - July 25, 2010
 
Snapshots of Ames, a juried photography exhibit of photos taken in or around Ames, will be showcased this summer at the Octagon Center for the Arts. All amateur and professional photographers that are residents of Iowa are eligible to enter. Photographs may be creative, unique, architectural, special events, sports, landscapes, weather, animals, people, places, etc. The photograph must be an original and taken within the Ames zip codes within the last two years. There will be cash prizes awarded to the photographers of the top seven photographs.

Garden Ornamentation"Celebration of Garden Ornamentation" 

This year, Reiman Gardens introduces a new theme featuring garden decoration, with a humorous twist. Come and explore the secret world of garden ornamentation!

Visit the15-foot gnome, built to be the largest gnome in the United States! Or come to the Gardens and take the Gnome Walk, enjoy 20 gnomes decorated by different organizations. Other displays include the southern garden tradition of hanging bottles from trees to capture evil spirits, the beautiful knot garden design of topiaries in the Herb Garden, the colorful pinwheels in the Campanile Garden, the mythical ornamentation of fairies and trolls in the Children's Garden, a rustic country scene complete with wheelbarrows and rusty gates in the Home Production Garden, a flock of plastic flamingos in the Pattern Garden and much more!

As spring transforms into summer, things are bustling at Reiman Gardens. Below is an idea of what is going on in the Gardens in the months of May and June.

Mid-Iowa Woodcarvers Association

Saturday, May 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Come and visit Reiman Gardens on Saturday May 1st to learn all about wood carving and woodcarving techniques from the Mid-Iowa Woodcarvers Association. The day will include woodcarving displays and demonstrations and classes to learn all about this fascinating art form.

Story County Master Gardener's Association Plant Sale

Saturday, May 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
A large selection of new plants, house plants, annuals, hanging baskets, container gardens and perennial divisions - many from the gardens of Master Gardeners - will be for sale. There will also be local vendors selling garden art.

Mother's Day
Sunday, May 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
All moms receive free entry to Reiman Gardens. Take Mom out for a stroll in the gardens, visit the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing and let Mom pick out a treasured keepsake from the Gift Shop.

Ames Garden Club Plant Sale
Saturday, May 15
Support the Ames Garden Club and shop for plants in the Reiman Gardens' Maintenance Building parking lot.

Memorial Day Weekend
Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In honor of their service, all active duty personnel and veterans will be admitted free.

AM in the Plaza

May 29, June 26, July 31 and August 28


The Ames Community Arts Council is proud to present a new Saturday morning event filled with friends, facts, and free fun for everyone!

AM in the Plaza will be held the last Saturday of each month, beginning May 29 at Tom Evans Plaza in downtown Ames. Invited artists will use their artistic skills to educate and enlighten children and adults of all ages. Enjoy three different 20 minute performances at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30am.

June 26 - Bob Welch - Songs of the Civil War, A Program of Music, History, and Storytelling
