e-newsletter heading 2

Greetings to our friends and supporters,

The month of August has us looking ahead toward fall and our annual Board Retreat, where we create our agency's direction and strategic priorities for the coming year; this year we are planning to do things a little differently! We would very much like to involve the community in the first phase of this process by inviting you to participate in a "Visioning Event" on Thursday, September 20, 2012, from 4:00 - 7:30 pm. (food and beverages provided).

Along with our Board, staff, facilitators, volunteers, and Advisory Council, we invite members of our community who have attended any of our Kids First Programs and feel they may have constructive feedback and ideas to come and help us do some "out-of-the-box" thinking to help move our organization forward.  Input from our constituents is incredibly valuable to us; if you think you may be interested in participating, please send me an email for the details, and let me know which program you attended ([email protected]).  Space is limited so please get in touch soon. And thank you in advance for being part of the Kids First family!

Judith Wallerstein and Divorce; how one woman headphones
changed the way we think about breakups
by Sandra Blakeslee
Divorce has consequences.
But most people didn't think about them before Judith Wallerstein.

My friend Judy Wallerstein, who died last month at age 90, liked to tell the story of how she was drawn into the rancorous national debate on divorce.  It was 1970 and Judy, a psychologist, had just moved with her husband and three children from the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan., to Marin Count in northern California.
It was a Sunday morning and her daughter's new friend Karen, age 9, had slept over.  As they were eating breakfast, Karen put her spoon into her mouth and stared off into space.  "I wonder," she said, laying aside the spoon, "if my mother is going to marry Mr. O'Brien."
