FROM THE HEART         NEWS FROM KIDS FIRST March 2012
Greetings to our friends and supporters,

The month of March at Kids First will feature a new session of our four-week Next Step Program: Putting Conflict Aside. This group focuses on managing conflict, fine tuning communication skills and addressing parenting arrangements and new relationships after a divorce or separation.   If this group fills up, we do have another one starting in April in Topsham.

Also, it's never too early to start thinking about the Beach to Beacon 10k Road Race, and becoming a member of the Kids First Center Team!  Contact us if you are interested in participating in this great experience.

And if you haven't do so already, please don't forget to vote for us through Bangor Savings Bank Community Matters More grant-making initiative!  Just write in our name under the Greater Portland heading and cast your vote for Kids First to receive $5000 (Voting ends March 5).  Thanks so much!

Sincerely,

Peg Libby

The Business Side of Co-Parenting
an excerpt from Kids First Next Step Program: Putting Conflict Aside

Kids First frequently refers to the need for parents in the process of a divorce or separation, especially in high conflict situations, to try to treat their co-parenting communications as business discussions.  In other words, on the phone or in person, stick to the facts and avoid getting too personal.  Though to some this may seem like a "cold" approach to dealing wth the other parent of your child, for many it provides just the right level of detachment to allow for true resolution of sticky issues while avoiding the emotional entanglements that frequently end in expletives and slammed phones/doors.

LOCAL FAMILY COURT JUDGES PUBLISH BOOK ON DIVORCEHortonKennedy

Judges Andrew Horton and John David Kennedy have presided over more than 10,000 trials or other courtroom events in Maine family law cases.  Horton and Kennedy recently published "Do Your Divorce Right: Straight Talk from Family Court Judges."  The book helps readers understand how to find and keep a lawyer, how to avoid a trial and how to achieve closure and peace.
