WORTH REPEATING: Come Take a Free Ride!
We're
on
a roll! For the third straight year, the Fondren Express is proud to
take part in Arts, Eats, & Beats next Thursday
in Fondren! The trolley will run
a continuous route
from 5pm-9:30pm along our "neighborhood route", similar to the same
route used for Fondren Unwrapped. The path encompasses stops in the
Council Circle area,
Woodland Hills, near St. James Church, and all throughout the Central
Business District of Fondren. Two additional stops have been added, the
first at the island at Council Circle, and the second at Hawthorn and
Avondale. And the best part of it all? The ride is FREE!
Arts,
Eats, & Beats will feature music of all varieties, an artisans'
market, food and drink, and kid's activities.
Special thanks to Fondren Guitars, One Blu Wall, and Sal & Mookie's for providing the "props" for our photo shoot! |

Police Foundation Explores Loss of SafeCity
There's
news out this week that SafeCity, the metro's answer to addressing public
safety issues, has closed its doors. But another criminal justice organization
says they are eager to explore a more active role to fill the void. The Jackson
Police Foundation, Inc., had taken a more "department focused" role in the past
while SafeCity always worked within political and citizen issues. But JPF
President Susan Lunardini says it's feasible to think her organization can step
up to the opportunity being presented. Lunardini says the better funded
SafeCity had five employees at one time while her foundation has never had a
single person on payroll. She says hiring an executive director will give the
JPF a chance to "determine the direction the foundation may go." Earlier this
week, SafeCity's board chairman Coyt Bailey cited the "state of the economy" as
the reason the former Metro Crime Commission has ceased.
What does
this mean for the annual 'Take a Tasty Bite' at Highland Village ?
Not to fear: the event will go on as scheduled in May and benefit the JPF,
Hinds County Sheriff's Office, and the Metro One helicopter program.

Restaurateurs Give Fondren New Option
Lloyd's Kitchen and Burwell's Deli fans take note: Mimi's in town and
she's bringing with her a new eatery and art gallery. Of course Steve is along
for the ride. Welcome Mimi's Restaurant to the former service station - more recently
eye care center - on North
State in Fondren. Linda
and Jim Burwell, who have owned and operated restaurants since the late 70's,
opened the place last week and say the building called their names for nearly a
year. Linda says she dreamed about it
before deciding something was "telling me I should do this." Breakfast and
lunch are served here and local art dots the walls. And the menu is solid: a
Cuban with spicy roast pork and shrimp remoulade is Jim's creation from way
back and even a catfish poboy among a limited number of other favorites. Mimi's
cheese grits are in the plans too. Linda says the mission is "fun, food, and funky art," introducing
local artists to perspective buyers in a less gallery-like location. A hearty
Fondren welcome goes out to our new neighbors!
