Evolution: Swell-O Style
 You'd
think after 11 years, a business would be well known, firmly planted, and
settling into its stride. That's not the case for Ron Chane and Swell-O-Phonic,
the Fondren businessman who continues to reinvent. With a move to Fondren
Corner six weeks ago, Chane says he's scratching an itch and a need to smother
predictability and complacency. "I'm always amazed," he says, "that people say 'we've
never heard of you.'" Chane, the thirty something South Jackson
native, points to this as a new challenge. "We're almost starting at zero", he
tells us, "even though I've been doing shirts for 21 years and running the
skate store for 11 plus."
Chane says it's the unpredictability of his business
model that has helped him grow, with his clothing line in New
York City ("the best thing we ever did"), and London, later this month. Add indie movies out front on the first
Thursday of every month, a hip hop battle every first Friday, skateboard contests
on the Fondren Corner parking deck, and the hard core music scene with the new
Swell-O-Venue behind Sneaky Beans, and there's no slowing down for Chane. "Maybe,"
he says, "when they've thrown dirt on my head."

Vacation Deals Abound at TravelFest
