Nick's Restaurant Moving to Fondren!
Express Mail has just learned that the 3000 Building on Old Canton Road will be home to one of Jackson's premier dining establishments. Nick's Restaurant, in business since 1983, will move by year's end. A Nick's staffer tells us the eatery will close December 23, 2009 and
reopen in Fondren the first week of January 2010.
We'll bring you more details as they become available.

Comeback Kids Tour Jackson
A very special group of
passengers boarded the Fondren Express last week to tour Jackson. They were students from New Orleans' Fischer
Accelerated Academy. The story might be similar to any other we
share about this group or that group riding the trolley. But this one's different. You see, before Hurricane Katrina, Fischer Elementary School
in Algiers was plagued with substandard test
scores, among the worst in New Orleans.
The school closed after the storm, not to be reopened. But now, just three short years later, the
new William J. Fischer Accelerated Academy,
with 415 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, is meeting the
diverse challenges of its pupils. Earlier this year, national, state, and local
education experts celebrated reports that students' scores on standardized
tests had risen dramatically. So it was with pleasure that we taught a
historical lesson of sorts as Fischer students saw our state capital, governor's
mansion, and many other notable landmarks around the city. We celebrate with Fischer for their achievements,
and would love to celebrate with you.
Reward a school group,
youth group, or business group to a Jackson
tour. We have all the details at FondrenExpress.com.

Thanks For Great Arts, Eats, & Beats
It seems like months ago already, but we're still talking about Arts, Eats, & Beats, and what a huge success you made it for us. Our hats are off to the merchants of Fondren, who, through the Find It In Fondren promotion, made it possible for us to run our neighborhood route. We heard so many great things from our riders about how this allowed them to enjoy the party without the worry of parking, or even driving to begin with. And we'd be remiss if we didn't thank others like Buddy Graham. Buddy helped to secure some parking areas for us for pick up and drop off. And to those churches (Fondren Presbyterian and Woodland Hills Baptist) whose lots we were allowed to use, we also say thanks. Thanks again to all who rode, and made this a fun night for us all!

DJP Ambassadors Promote Safety
Downtown Jackson Partners has recently hired a new firm to oversee safety, cleaning,
and landscaping in the downtown area. Block by Block,
headquartered in
Louisville,
KY, began operating this month in
the 66-block area that makes up the downtown Jackson Business
Improvement District (BID). The company provides teams of
"ambassadors" who provide a visible presence to help proactively
address safety concerns, litter, graffiti, and landscaping. Block by
Block employees also offer tourist information and
directions. The safety ambassadors,
who patrol on bicycle from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through
Saturday, serve as additional eyes and ears for local authorities,
offering radio communication and safety escorts. According to Ben Allen,
president of Downtown Jackson Partners, the new firm is a better fit
for the changing dynamics of downtown. "The instances of crime in
downtown
Jackson are way down. Block by
Block will be a visible team complementing our police presence."
