Reimagine the OU Daily tonight with Rob Curley and the OU Daily Staff
|
Rob Curley Internet Punk, Media Nerd, Web GuruSept. 17, 7 p.m.Meacham Auditorium, OMUFor the last four years, Curley has held executive newsroom positions at the Las Vegas Sun and Greenspun Media Group. During that period, the Sun became the first news organization in the world to win top awards in digital journalism (the ONA and Eppy), the top award in broadcast journalism (the duPont) and the top award in print journalism (the Pulitzer). Previously, Curley was vice president of product development for Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, where he led a team that developed new tools for journalists and viewers. He moved to Washington from Lawrence, Kan., where he held management positions in the online and editorial departments at the Lawrence Journal-World. The open event will kick off a semester-long study of student media offerings at OU. The study, Imagine the Future: Campus Media in a Digital Age, will help OU Student Media determine the future course of its 96-year-old independent student newspaper, The Oklahoma Daily, and its website, OUDaily.com. OU Student Media Director Brian Ringer proposed the study following announcements of dramatic change at other college newspapers last year. In July 2011, the University of Georgia's Red & Black newspaper ceased daily print publication to focus on its website, then reversed course last month. In May, the University of Oregon's Daily Emerald ceased daily publication, switching to two weekly publications and a beefed-up website. Read more about Rob CurleyA 2005 business section story in the New York Times referred to Curley's work in Lawrence as "the newspaper of the future." Strategic Communication Book Club

Jon Steel's "The Perfect Pitch" Tuesday, Oct. 912:30 p.m.Lindsey + Asp Presentation RoomAvailable from Amazon or your local bookseller. Also available for Kindle. From Amazaon: "What is the most moving, compelling, and ultimately persuasive argument you ever heard? I'll bet that very few people think of an argument they heard in a conference room presentation." During his phenomenal twenty-year career in advertising, Jon Steel has won more than ninety percent of the new business he has pitched, winning multi-million dollar contracts from clients like Nike, Sony, Pepsi, Porsche, and Hewlett-Packard. Now this professional "pitching coach" for one of the world's largest marketing communication conglomerates shares his secrets. Steel explains how you really create presentations that win hearts, minds, and new business. He also draws on intriguing presentation examples from the real world-including the O. J. Simpson trial, Bill Clinton's presidential debates, the speeches of Sir Winston Churchill and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and even his own marriage proposal to his wife. Steel identifies the "presentation crimes" committed every day across the business world and the pillars on which all successful presentations are built. He discusses audience psychology, the importance of listening, and how to use real-world examples to make points more powerfully. Perfect Pitch covers every aspect of the pitch process, from assembling a presentation team to rehearsals and the preparation of compelling leave-behind documents. A must-read for advertising and sales professionals, this book is a should-read for anyone who makes pitches of any sort-from sales professionals to Realtors who list and sell houses to business executives who want to seal deals. The book ends with an inside look at London's successful dark horse bid for the 2012 Olympics-a perfect pitch.
