Software Specialist, Michael Acker
Michael Acker
Michael R. Acker is the new Software Specialist for the Gaylord College, otherwise known as Buddy's right-hand man.

Acker is a 2012 journalism graduate of the Gaylord College and will be responsible for helping students, faculty and staff in the college with software questions and training on the Adobe Creative Suite and Apple Final Cut Pro. Acker has recently earned his first level of certification for Apple's Final Cut Pro X.

Acker will also be coordinating the college's Stream Team of videographers who stream lectures and events for the Gaylord College and campus events to be posted to the  iTunes U channel.

Also, Alan Wiehle will be coordinating schedules for student workers in both the Creative and Convergence labs this year.
Alan will also be working out of the Creative Lab.

Dream Course: Journalism Ethics & Politics
Associate Dean David Craig is leading a Presidential Dream course this semester focusing of Journalism Ethics & Politics. This course will bring several experts and journalists from across the country to OU. All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend these special guest lecture events.

 Michael McNutt, Capitol Bureau reporter, The Oklahoman


Murphy is the AP's top political reporter in the state. He breaks news and produces investigative stories on politicians and state government leaders. Before joining the AP, he worked as the Capitol correspondent for a group of newspapers owned by Community Newspaper Holdings. He also reported for The Norman Transcript.

 

McNutt is a senior reporter at the Capitol and a veteran of newspapers in Oklahoma and Missouri. He primarily covers the House of Representatives and the governor along with several statewide officials and agencies.

Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium

For the last four years, Curley has held executive newsroom positions at the Las Vegas Sun and Greenspun Media Group. During that period, the Sun became the first news organization in the world to win top awards in digital journalism (the ONA and Eppy), the top award in broadcast journalism (the duPont) and the top award in print journalism (the Pulitzer).

Previously, Curley was vice president of product development for Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, where he led a team that developed new tools for journalists and viewers. He moved to Washington from Lawrence, Kan., where he held management positions in the online and editorial departments at the Lawrence Journal-World.

A 2005 business section story in the New York Times referred to Curley's work in Lawrence as "the newspaper of the future."

OU Society of Professional Journalists is hosting a Twitter Scavenger Hunt from 6-9 p.m. on Sept. 5th! Grab a partner and meet us in the Hall of Fame Room for a short registration session, a Jimmy Johns sandwich and drinks. We will give you a list of clues to items you will take a photo of, and tweet the photo to OU_SPJ with a clever cutline. The winning team receives two $25 Visa gift cards and a gift certificate for a treat from Cookies-N-Cards!

Tulsa-born Judy Woodruff, veteran broadcast journalist and anchor for the PBS NewsHour, will be honored with the University of Oklahoma's 2012 Gaylord Prize for Excellence in Journalism and Mass Communication.

 

Woodruff is a pioneer for women in the media. Her career spans more than 40 years covering politics and serving as Washington correspondent for NBC, CNN and PBS. Woodruff is now a regular co-anchor and senior correspondent for the PBS NewsHour. In addition, she hosts a monthly show, Conversations with Judy Woodruff, for Bloomberg Television.

Army Media Training canceled
 
Due to federal budget cuts, the Department of Defense has chosen to "not" renew the media training contract. Therefore, we will not be conducting any additional trainings until there is a balance/approved Federal budget with funds for Military training, and the Department of Defense renews our contract.

To all the students and faculty who have participated in previous trainings - THANK YOU!!

International Advertising

Gain an international perspective and understanding for how advertising works outside of the U.S. The Gaylord College has offered a course in international advertising in 10 out of the past 11
years. We will likely offer the class again this year. The course will be led by Professor Jim Avery.

Overview:    This class is intended to give advertising, public relations, design and marketing students a view of how professional communication works internationally.

Location:    Part of the study will be at the University of Oklahoma.  The remainder will take place in either Asia or Europe: 

  • Asia:  Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, and Hong Kong
  • Europe:  Budapest, Frankfurt, and London. 

The class will visit advertising agencies, public relations firms and potentially some marketing firms in the region of choice.  There will be time for students to visit some sites of their choice.

Position Location: Oklahoma City, Okla.

The Office of Governor Mary Fallin is currently seeking part-time interns for the upcoming Fall Semester.  The chosen candidates will have a number of duties, including assisting office staff with research, special events, attending committee and board meetings, database management, scheduling, and correspondence.   Applicants should be interested in government and working with Oklahoma's top public policy officials.

Position Period: Fall 2012 (September - December)
Hours: Candidate should be available a minimum of 15 hours per week

Qualifications:

College Junior or Senior studying political science, history, pre-law, public relations, economics, communications, or any other applicable field
Excellent organization and communication skills
Proficiency in writing correspondence
Time-management skills
Phone experience/customer relations
Professional demeanor/positive attitude
Self-starter and willingness to take initiative
Research skills
Microsoft Office experience, specifically Word and Excel
Compensation: Non-paid; available for course credit.
