OU Daily staff receive award for innovation
|
The Oklahoma Daily has been recognized nationally for innovation in college media. The paper learned in July that it won an honorable mention in the new Innovator of the Year for College Students category of the Journalism Excellence Awards sponsored by the Associated Press Media Editors organization. The judges recognized The Daily for its commitment to transparency, shown by offering readers "a simple, elegant presentation of corrections and open-records requests." APME is an association of editors at newspapers, broadcast outlets and journalism educators and student leaders in the United States and Canada. APME works closely with The Associated Press to foster journalism excellence. Awards will be presented at the group's annual conference Sept. 19-21 in Nashville, Tenn.

Summer PR Student is AP Style Jeopardy Champion!
| |

If you can't remember when to abbreviate "senator" or whether to someone is 5-6, 5-foot-6 or five-foot-six, ask public relations junior Andrea Pemberton.
Pemberton won the AP Stylebook Jeopardy tournament of the summer JMC 2033 Writing for Mass Media class. She swept all three semifinal rounds and then won the final to earn the title. Professional writing sophomore Paige Warren was the runner-up.
Instructor Judy Gibbs Robinson implemented the tournament in fall 2011 based on input from some professors who said students were coming out of the writing class without adequate knowledge of AP style.

International Advertising
|
Gain an international perspective and understanding for how advertising works outside of the U.S. The Gaylord College has offered a course in international advertising in 10 out of the past 11 years. We will likely offer the class again this year. The course will be led by Professor Jim Avery.
Overview: This class is intended to give advertising, public relations, design and marketing students a view of how professional communication works internationally.
Location: Part of the study will be at the University of Oklahoma. The remainder will take place in either Asia or Europe:
- Asia: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, and Hong Kong
- Europe: Budapest, Frankfurt, and London.
The class will visit advertising agencies, public relations firms and potentially some marketing firms in the region of choice. There will be time for students to visit some sites of their choice.
