Congratulations NSAC Video Team!!!
Last week we gave a shout out to the Ad students on the NSAC Team and Professor Scott Hodgson's class which helped produce the outstanding television commercial. Unfortunately, we gave the credit to the wrong class! The following is a list of the students from Prof. Hodgson's BROADCAST ADVERTISING PRODUCTION CLASS and their roles.

NSAC 2012 Award

 

Congrats Dr. Aimei Yang!
Aimei YangCongratulations to Aimei Yang on the completion of her doctoral studies and successful defense of her dissertation. She is now a full fledged Ph.D.!

DR. YANG has accepted a position with University of South Dakota.

 

Be part of next year's NSAC Team
Applications for next year's National Student Advertising Competition team are now available from Professor Tarpenning.  Applications will be accepted until Friday, April 27.

Candidates will be interviewed the following week and the team will be announced on May 4. The client for next year's competition has not yet been announced but the probability is that the announcement will be made during the national competition in June. Both underclass and upperclass applicants will be considered.

Gaylord College faculty, students, alumni receive SPJ Awards
SPJ LogoGaylord College was well represented by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists on Saturday, April 21.

Professor Warren Vieth received four awards for investigative reporting he has done with Oklahoma Watch. Vieth is currently the interim editor of the web publication.
  • Investigative Reporting by Individual: 1, Warren Vieth, Oklahoma Watch
  • In-Depth Enterprise Reporting: 3, Warren Vieth, Oklahoma Watch
  • Government Reporting: 1, Warren Vieth, Oklahoma Watch
  • Criminal Justice Reporting: 1, Warren Vieth, Oklahoma Watch

In addition, Chris Lusk, editor of The OU Daily received two awards for design and layout.
The OU Daily also received second place as Best Newspaper in the state with circulation under 25,000.

Two graduate students also received awards: M. Scott Carter and Logan Layden. Carter, MPW,  received 11 awards and Layden, MA in media arts, received three awards. Carter is a professional reporter for The Journal Record newspaper, and Layden is a media specialist with KGOU.

Gaylord alumni Melanie Wilderman, Brianna Bailey, and Brian Harzinski also received awards. Wilderman, a 2001 B.A. in journalism graduate and 2003 M.A. graduate, was named the 2012 Teacher of the Year. She currently teaches journalism at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK. Her mentor, Dr. Peter Gade presented her with the award.

Another recent grad that caught our attention was Brianna Bailey, 2006 journalism grad, who received four awards writing for The Journal Record. Hardzinksi, 2008 BEM, also received several awards for his work at KGOU.

Gaylord College named Apple Distinguished Program

Apple Presentation 

The Gaylord College is the first collegiate journalism program in the United States to be named an Apple Distinguished Program for its comprehensive integration of Apple-inspired technology throughout its building and curriculum. The Apple Distinguished Program designation is reserved for academic units that are recognized centers of educational excellence and leadership.

 

Gaylord College students have become master storytellers with Apple hardware, software and servers, which provide students with a virtual environment to work collaboratively - on and off campus.

Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium

Expedition to Africa: Ghana is a short documentary which explores the culture, people and places of this West African nation. Through the tour of Ghana you'll learn about the history and events that shaped Ghana into what it is today. Insight is provided by students that were along for every step of the trip.

Students Developing Quiz Show
Quiz Show

BEM students are in the process of producing and directing a game show to air on OUTV (Cox 124 metrowide, Campus Channel 76, AT&T uVerse 99 metrowide) called Quiztopia.

This game show culminates in a championship round (to be shot during April), where previous episode winners are teamed to answer questions about pop culture, physics, anatomy, math, sports, history, and a host of other topics.

Crews have been out on historic Campus Corner and on the Norman main campus, capturing videos of OU students responding to Quiztopia questions as well. These videos are integrated into each episode during the multimedia round.
Cory Lingner, OU Drama Junior, provided voice overs for each episode.

Underwriting & prizes for each episode is provided by Wingstop and Raising Canes.

The Gaylord College Convocation Speaker will be Kathy Taylor, former Tulsa mayor and Oklahoma Commerce Secretary. She is a 1978 general broadcasting major and received her juris doctorate in 1981. She is now with the McAffee and Taft law firm in Tulsa.

Those graduating are asked to arrive at 3:30 p.m. in cap and gown for lineup in Wagner Hall.

If you have family members or other guests that will need disability assistance for the ceremony, please let the student services office know prior to the event.

A reception will be held immediately following Convocation in Gaylord Hall.

NYC Advertising Agency Tours, Oct. 31-Nov.4
The 2012 New York City advertising agency tour will be October 31 through November 4.  The football game that weekend is Iowa at Iowa.  We'll visit seven agencies and meet with alumni on Thursday night, November 1.  Since it's necessary to make hotel reservations over the summer, all applications for the trip must be in by May 11.  For more information and an application, see Professor Tarpenning in Lindsey + Asp. The course number is JMC 4970 and you can begin enrolling on October 15. 

 

$10,000 OETA Scholarship, deadline June 1, 2012
OETA has established a new $10,000  scholarship for students completing their sophomore year at any accredited Oklahoma university.  The scholarship is designed to support students completing their final two years of a broadcasting major.
