OU President Boren gives students the scoop first
President David Boren came to Gaylord Hall on Wednesday, April 11 to announce the name of the university's 2012 commencement speaker. At a news conference for student reporters in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation auditorium, Boren said the speaker will be Brown University President Ruth Simmons, the daughter of a Texas sharecropper. He also announced that four people will receive honorary degrees, including two with close ties to Gaylord college: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anthony Shadid, who died on the job in February in Syria; and William J. Ross, chairman of the board of directors of the Oklahoma City-based Inasmuch Foundation and the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, which helped fund construction of Gaylord Hall. About a dozen student journalists attended the news conference along with students from several classes, who attended as observers. It was Boren's second student-only news conference in Gaylord Hall. The first was in November. The president has pledged to hold one such news conference per semester to give student journalists experience and to announce campus-relevant news.

Get the experience you need to get a job
It's called "Catch 22." To get a job in media, you have to have worked in media. Ad directors and editors alike want to see resumes with real-world experience and clips to show what you can do. So if no one will hire you without experience, how do you get experience? Student Media, publisher of The Oklahoma Daily, Sooner yearbook, Sower magazine and other niche publications, is one answer, and we're right here on campus. We're now hiring to fill summer and fall positions in advertising, reporting, editing, design, photography, videography, social media, online publishing and more. Interested? Applying is easy. Go to http://www.studentmedia.ou.edu/jobs and fill out the online application. Don't wait. The deadline to apply for summer and fall positions is April 20.
