Get involved with the Lindsey + Asp Agency!
|
Agency Leadership Academy, JMC 4970-340 Calling all public relations underclassmen! This is your opportunity to jump start your Lindsey + Asp experience! Consider enrolling in the summer Leadership Academy. This course is open to everyone, but focused specifically on underclassmen. There are no prerequisites. You'll learn about Agency operations and leadership and working on the Agency's critical clients over the summer.
One of the special events that only happens during the Leadership Academy is the weekly lecture series. Each week, students have the opportunity to talk with, either in person or via Skype, some of the top names in the business. Last year's roster of speakers included John Paluszek, Senior Counsel, Ketchum and Ron Culp, then Partner and Lead, North American operations, Ketchum. The formal course is held during the July block, but you'll get started working with clients in late May.
Applications for Leadership Academy may be obtained from Kathy Sawyer and Prof. Pritchard. The Leadership Academy is NOT required to participate in the Agency for Fall 2012.

The agency is also accepting applications for the Fall semester for both the advertising and public relations teams. Pick up applications from Kathy Sawyer for advertising or Melanie Adams for public relations. BEM or broadcasting students wishing to provide video/commercial production should see Kathy Sawyer.

New OU Daily & Yearbook editors

The OU Publications Board on Friday selected three Gaylord students to lead the Oklahoma Daily and Sooner yearbook in coming semesters.
Journalism senior Chris Lusk, currently the Daily editor-in-chief, was selected to continue in that roll in the summer 2012 semester.
Professional writing junior Laney Ellisor, currently the Daily campus editor, will become editor-in-chief for the fall 2012-spring 2013 semesters.
Journalism junior Tegan Burkhard, currently Sooner yearbook managing editor, will be editor-in-chief of the 2013 book.

OBEA Awards Banquet

 Seventeen Gaylord students attended the recent Oklahoma Broadcasting Education Association award ceremony at the Oklahoma History Center. As previously reported, a total of 27 Gaylord students brought home nearly a quarter of ALL awards given out at the March 8 awards ceremony. Click here for a list of the winners.

Student projects listed as finalists for NBS/AERho

Six Gaylord College student projects have been named as finalists in the 2012 National Broadcasting Society /Alpha Epsilon Rho competition. Final award winners will be announced at the national conference at the end of March. Click here for a list of the finalists.

Freedom of Information in Oklahoma Conference
|
Seven Gaylord students and one faculty member attended Freedom of Information Oklahoma's Sunshine 2012 conference Saturday at OPUBCO in Oklahoma City.
Journalism senior Chris Lusk participated in a panel discussion about how colleges and universities interpret the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to restrict access to information.
Other students attending were professional writing junior Laney Ellisor, journalism senior Lindsey Ruta and JMC 2033 students Kay Weir, Lauren Cox, Anna Restuccia and Kevin McMahon.
Journalism faculty member Judy Gibbs Robinson, a member of the FOI Oklahoma board, also attended, and journalism faculty member Charles Self was elected FOI-Oklahoma president-elect during a brief board meeting following the conference. Self will assume the presidency in 2013.

There will be a quick general meeting and business followed by a planning session for our upcoming event, the First Amendment Food Fair, set to occur in April. SPJ would like to invite any Gaylord students and clubs interested in helping with the event, or interested in joining SPJ, to attend and sign up for committees and learn more about the event. | Zenith Awards now accepting entries |  The 2012 Zenith Awards is now accepting entries. Submissions will be accepted until March 30th at 5 p.m. Details regarding the competition and entries may be found at http://zenithawards.wordpress.com/ Entries may be submitted in seven categories: writing, campaigns, electronic media, publications design, social media, case studies and research. Prestigious figures within the public relations, graphic design and journalism industries will evaluate all submissions to establish a winner in each category.

Announcing the NMF5 MUSIC Video Contest!

 SUBMIT your MUSIC VIDEOS, FOR FREE! The NMF5 music video contest is now taking submissions through April 13 This year all submitted music videos will be judged by 3 super swell peeps: Vahid Farzaneh of Freestyle Productions, C...acky Poarch, former deadCENTER executive director, and Mike Hosty, local singer and songwriter. All videos meeting the guidelines will be judged, but Pro's Pick (jury prize), People's Pick (audience favorite), and Okie Pick (Oklahoma favorite) will be screened on the Main Stage during NMF in front of thousands of music fans before the NMF5 headliner, Portugal the Man, performs. Based on judges scores, the top 10 videos will play throughout the festival and will be entered into the People's Pick and Okie Pick categories. Please visit the Norman Music Festival site for more information on the festival and news. Also, Pro's Pick, People's Pick and Okie Pick winners will receive a sponsored prize with their award. All music videos must be original. Due to copyright issues only original videos qualify. All genres will be considered. Only 2 submissions per director. The Norman Music Festival is a family oriented event that is free and open to the public. Videos containing nudity, violence, and/or profanity will not be accepted. Most important, please ensure the video/audio is of high quality. Low quality video/audio may prohibit NMF from playing a video during the festival. Understand how to handle a variety of media interview settings through practical, hands-on exercises. The course caps off with a field trip to talk with and see the experts in action. You won't want to miss this special topics class! Survey of Gaming and Interactive MediaJMC 4970-141 May Intersession, May 14-June 8 Monday-Friday, 1 - 3:10 pm Instructor is Bryan Carr ( bcarr@ou.edu) The course will cover the historical development and current trends in video games and interactive media, including the cultural issues that surround them, academic and theoretical approaches to video game study, and careers for JMC and other majors in the field (to name just a few things). Web Design + StrategyArt 4970-340 / Block C July 10 to August 3 Monday - Friday, 8 am to 12:15 pm Instructor is Rachel Fujita ( rachel.fujita@ou.edu) This is the first time a class has been offered as a cross-list with the OU Visual Communication department and it promises to be something not to be missed. The course covers the process of conceptualizing, designing and producing functional web projects, utilizing industry standards and strategies including usability research, web design principles, information architecture and user testing. Technologies to be covered include HTML, CSS, Flash Catalyst, JavaScript. Must be a junior and have a working knowledge of Photoshop. A personal laptop is recommended.
