Gaylord in Top 5 with BEA Awards!

When the honors are given at the April Broadcast Education Association convention in Las Vegas, Gaylord students will bring home eight national awards. This is the most awards OU has ever won at the national BEA Festival, putting OU in the top five schools for the number of student awards.

  

News Competition 

In the News Competition, OU Nightly tied for second place as best daily newscast in the country. This is the first time the Gaylord College's newscast has held a top national position. 


Three OU Nightly on-air talent were also honored: Allison Harris won a second Place; and Aaryn Cahill, Honorable Mention in the Television News Anchor category; Television Weathercaster, Jon Haverfield captured a second Place.

 

OU also took two honorable mentions for feature reporting: Logan Layden, Radio Feature Reporting for KGOU "Illegal Immigration Debate Breeds Confusion;" and, Chinh Doan, Television Feature Reporting, for her story, "OU Mom."  

Overall, OU was ranked fourth in the number of student awards won in news categories.

OU also took two awards for promotional pieces: Josh Shockley, Hannah Foster and Zach Strauss won a third place award for "This is Our Classroom," a version of the video shown as the Gaylord Prize; Cameron Masingale and Kourtney Atchley won honorable mention for their Littering PSA.

Professor Fischer & Two Students Receive Recognition from OAB
Two Gaylord College students will receive Education Foundation scholarships from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters. These deserving students will each receive $2,000 for the 2012-13 academic year. Two of the six awards made were to our students.

Professor Ken Fischerwas also recognized as the 2012 Lisa John Faculty Fellowship recipient. The $3,000 Fellowship is a four-week work program at an Oklahoma radio or television station providing an opportunity for faculty members at Oklahoma's broadcast schools to update their skills and develop closer relationships with radio and television broadcasters.

Two Receive Sports Scholarships
1st Bob Barry Recipients
Brendan Williams (middle left) and Josh Kopelman (middle right) are the first recipients of the Bob Barry Sr. Endowment for Student Sports Programs. The money enabled them to cover the Insight Bowl live from Tempe, Arizona. Their coverage included posting a story right after the game on ROUTES and an extended report for OUr Sports Pad which aired on Feb. 13.


Game Show Contestants Needed!
A new game show to be filmed LIVE at Gaylord Hall is calling for ENGERGETIC, FUN, and EXCITING contestants. Food will be provided for those who participate. Prizes to be announced. Open to all OU students.

We are shooting 7 episodes starting in March through April on Tuesday and Thursday nights. There will be three contestants selected to be on each show. Filming dates will be determined by contestants' schedule.

Last Call for CAC Film Fest Entries!
CAC logoThe Campus Activities Council Film Series and Union Programming Board are proud to sponsor the third annual Student Film Festival on March 1st, 2012 in Meacham Auditorium at 7pm.

We are seeking submissions of films from 5-15 minutes long.

Film submissions are due to the Student Life Office (Suite 370) on the 3rd floor of the Oklahoma Memorial Union by 5 p.m. on February 21, 2012.

Films should be in DVD format. Judging will be based on technical expertise, quality, and overall content. Films judged as too obscene by the selection committee will be automatically disqualified. Only one film will be accepted per applicant.

The inaugural Mr. Gaylord Pageant is a fundraiser for PRSSA professional development trips. The pageant is a spoof pageant in which 6-10 male Gaylord students will show off their best interview attire, answer an on-stage question, compete in a swimsuit competition and show off their talent. (NOTE: They will not be dressing up as women nor wearing inappropriate or revealing swim attire.)

Ticket price is $5. Get your ticket from a PRSSA member or at the door!

Professors John Schmeltzer and Julie Jones will host a weather panel with Dave Hennen from CNN and Aaron Brodie, based in Dallas, speaking about weather reporting. 

This panel discussion is open to all faculty and students and will also be part of NOAA's Severe Weather Conference to be held that weekend.

The course will cover the historical development and current trends in video games and interactive media, including the cultural issues that surround them, academic and theoretical approaches to video game study, and careers for JMC and other majors in the field (to name just a few things).

This is the first time a class has been offered as a cross-list with the OU Visual Communication department and it promises to be something not to be missed. The course covers the process of conceptualizing, designing and producing functional web projects, utilizing industry standards and strategies including usability research, web design principles, information architecture and user testing. Technologies to be covered include HTML, CSS, Flash Catalyst, JavaScript.

Must be a junior and have a working knowledge of Photoshop. A personal laptop is recommended.

Are you interested in publishing an ebook or other content for use on the iPad or other tablets? Do you already have graphically-rich publications created in Adobe InDesign that you would like to convert to ebooks? Then you might be interested in the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.

Tom Petrillo and Bridget McNamara from Adobe will be at OU demonstrating how InDesign users can convert their documents to ebooks.

Please RSVP back to Celia Perkins (cperkins@ou.edu) so that we may have an approximate count. The auditorium holds 180 people and seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. Also, please let us know if you need any special assistance on the basis of disability.

Mark your calendar for the 2012 Greater Grads Career Fair, which will be held on March 2, 2012 at the Cox Center, downtown Oklahoma City. American Indian Journalism Institute taking apps
Deadline: March 1

The Freedom Forum is accepting applications for the 12th American Indian Journalism Institute summer session, the premier journalism training, scholarship and internship program for Native American college students, June 13-22

Students attend AIJI for free and receive other financial assistance. Applications are welcome from any Native American college student preparing to become a journalist.

WCPJ now accepting applications for Fall 2012  

A Washington Semester for Future Political Reporters

 

Washington, D.C.The Politics & Journalism Semester is a program of the Washington Center for Politics & Journalism. The Center brings a dozen college student journalists, whose career goal is political reporting, to Washington each semester.

 

Students learn about campaign, governance and interest group politics in twice-weekly seminars, featuring political consultants and operatives, elected and party officials, and national political journalists. They receive practical experience and exposure to national politics as reporting interns in major Washington news bureaus.

 

Deadline for applications is Friday, April 6. 

 

Duration  

Two 16-week classes are conducted each year, Fall (September to December) and Winter/Spring (February to May.) Note: There is no summer session.

$3,000 Stipend, No Tuition or Fees  

Students each receive a $3,000 stipend to assist with the cost of locating and living in Washington, DC for four months. They pay no tuition or other fees. Students must make their own Washington living arrangements.

Student Obligations  

Students accepted for a semester program are obligated to work full time for news bureaus to which they are assigned, and to attend all seminars.

Academic Credit 

Academic credit for the semester is assigned at the discretion of each student's school.
