OCB Conference

Conference a Success

More than 75 people from several Oklahoma and Texas colleges were in attendance for the Fall 2010 NBS Region 4/NATPE Conference, Nov. 5-6.  The conference was a combined effort of the Gaylord College student broadcast club, Oklahoma College Broadcasters, the National Broadcasting Society and National Association of Television Program Executives. On Friday evening attendees toured the Soonervision facilities at the Gaylord Family Stadium.  On Saturday the morning session featured a panel of Oklahoma broadcasting professionals and included a mock job interview.  Several of the panelists are Gaylord College graduates.  The session aired live on OUTV from 10 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  It was the first multi-camera television program produced in the Ethics in Excellence Auditorium.  After lunch the NBS Region 4 Awards ceremony took place.  Gaylord College students received 18 awards including 5 first place winners (see list below).  The day ended with a tour of the KOCO-TV station in Oklahoma City.

Special thanks to NBS Region 4 Director Suzanne Kessler, Dick Block of NATPE, Oklahoma College Broadcasters (NBS Chapter) President Sarah Drew, Conference Coordinator Hunter Ligon and Gaylord College Dean Joe Foote on their willingness to combine efforts.  Zach Blocker produced the television coverage and student Eli Hull directed the live cablecast. Faculty and staff Scott Hodgson, Lynn Franklin and Monty Roberts assisted in the production set-up.

Book Discussion Club
Here Comes Everybody by Clay ShirkyWednesday, Nov., 17
12:30 p.m.
Lindsey & Asp conference room

We will be reading "Here Comes Everybody: the power of organizing without organizations." by Clay Shirky. The discussion will last about 30 minutes to an hour and anyone is invited to come. You do not have to read the entire book to attend. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is looking to add a RELEVANT line to their resume, and it has helped OU ad students in recent history do well in interviews with big time agencies.

This book also has applications to other JMC fields than just advertising. The author discusses citizen journalists as well as Flash Mobs and discusses how the way we work has changed which has implications for all fields.

From the book jacket:
Blogs, wikis and other Web 2.0 accoutrements are revolutionizing the social order, a development that's cause for more excitement than alarm, argues interactive telecommunications professor Shirky. He contextualizes the digital networking age with philosophical, sociological, economic and statistical theories and points to its major successes and failures. Grassroots activism stands among the winners-Belarus's flash mobs, for example, blog their way to unprecedented antiauthoritarian demonstrations. Likewise, user/contributor-managed Wikipedia raises the bar for production efficiency by throwing traditional corporate hierarchy out the window. Print journalism falters as publishing methods are transformed through the Web. Shirky is at his best deconstructing Web failures like Wikitorial, the Los Angeles Times's attempt to facilitate group op-ed writing. Readers will appreciate the Gladwellesque lucidity of his assessments on what makes or breaks group efforts online: Every story in this book relies on the successful fusion of a plausible promise, an effective tool, and an acceptable bargain with the users. The sum of Shirky's incisive exploration, like the Web itself, is greater than its parts.
