Bob Bernstein Delivers Convocation Speech

Bob Bernstein delivers convocation speech

Bob Bernstein is president and CEO of Bernstein-Rein Advertising. He left OU in spring 1960 after changing his major to journalism from radio and television in his final year. Bernstein worked for several regional film and advertising companies in the Kansas City area before founding his own company, Bernstein-Rein Advertising in 1964. Along with his partner, Skip Rein, he grew the agency from the ground up to include clients such as Blockbuster, Thrifty Car Rental, McDonald's and Wal-Mart. His agency is recognized as the inventor of the McDonald's Happy Meal.

Bernstein serves on the boards of several Kansas City museums and philanthropic interests and has been instrumental in establishing regional non-profits such as The Children's Place and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Louise B. Moore honored by former students

Lindsey Asp group with logoA special fund-raising effort is drawing to an end which will honor the legendary Oklahoma Daily faculty adviser Louise B. Moore. Five former Daily editors - Carol J. Robinson Burr, Linda Johnson, Barbara Winn Sessions, Larry Chilnick and Karen Vinyard Waddell - spearheaded the drive to memorialize the woman who was their teacher, mentor and a cherished friend.

Moore became faculty adviser of The Oklahoma Daily in 1952, serving in that position for 19 years. She had a tremendous impact on students who majored in journalism and worked on the student paper.

The goal is to raise funds to name a prominent and well-used area in OU's Gaylord Hall in her memory. A plaque and photograph will be placed in the area so that current and future students will know about Moore and what she meant to the OU journalism program. Responses received from former students of Moore have been heartfelt remembrances and expressions of gratitude that this initiative is under way.

"Mrs. Moore left us a lifetime legacy of high professional ethics, accuracy and fairness as well as personal courage, loyalty and friendship. To have her name prominently preserved in the new J-building can inspire OU's future journalists to embrace the qualities she held dear," said Carol Burr, who served as editor of The Daily in fall 1958.

Gaylord Students Study Media in London

WSJ & British Media Tour

Gaylord College offers students several study abroad options, but only one is led by the dean himself. Each year Dean Joe Foote and Assistant Professor Ralph Beliveau take nearly 30 students to London, Bristol and Paris to tour leading media outlets and strategic communication firms. The three-week intersession class visits media powerhouses like the BBC and Sky News.

This year the group also toured the London offices of the Wall Street Journal online where they met Jennifer Johnson Hicks (above front row center) a 2002 OU graduate. Hicks will be honored as the 2010 JayMac Young Professional in October.

Follow along with students on their blog as they learn about media practices across the pond and tour London and Paris or find them on Facebook or Twitter.
